Another Jamboree has come and gone and we survived! It was the town's 42nd one with lots and lots of rain.
Mother Nature poured buckets of water throughout the weekend which affected the attendance and booth sales.
The program went on though, as usual. As I was part of the Community Chorus, umbrellas decorated the audience. I thought the Community Chorus did an exceptional performance under the talented Fay Fuqua, director, and pianist Susan Hinton. Mary Ann Puckett was one of the stars with her tap dancing revue and Dr. Robert Roy Atnip joined her for a swinging step duo. It was a good patriotic program with the children, too.
I strolled through the streets and around the courthouse in the rain and bought an apricot fried pie at the Sr. Citizens area in the City Hall. Jean Hayes had made them, all 800 of them, I was told.
Former hometowners seen last weekend were Delma and Jewell Murphy from Atlanta. It was also Jewell's 1957 class reunion on Saturday. Others were Rebecca Hill Holander and husband, Brian, from Nashville; Carlene Miller Hurst and family from Georgia; Vanissa Braswell and husband, Gordon; Murphy from Wisconsin; Cynthia Page and husband, Chris Vernon, (children, Lucia and Beatrice) from Franklin and Barbara (Love) and Johnny Christian from Texas.
Another good Independence story that Doyle Smith shared was the lining up of people waving flags when the World War II veterans entered the Nashville airport following their trip to Washington, D.C.
The High School Sisters group gathered at Center Hill Restaurant on Friday for their annual reunion. Present were Lounette Braswell Nicol from Atlanta, Glenda Adkins Watson of Hendersonville, Patsy Trapp Swindle and granddaughter, Taryn, from Madison, Rosemary Twilla Jarvis from Sparta, Faye Christian Nixon of Alexandria, and from Smithville Janis Moss Moorehead, Sherry Chumbley Bush, and me. We all enjoyed a delicious lunch and after a relevant quiz, they exchanged gifts. Missing were Lillian, Sammie, Ethel Ann and Mary.
Danny and Debbie France were riding a motorcycle in New Mexico when a hail storm occurred.
The hail was the size of golf balls and hit Danny in the head, causing an accident. Their sons, Justin and Casey, drove out there to rescue them and brought them home. Danny suffered a broken leg and injured shoulder.
Get-well wishes go to Spencer Iverlett after hip surgery; and Danny and Debbie France and Rev. Terry Little for next week. Blessings on them and or prayers for their recovery.
Consignment and Sew Forth will have their Grand Opening on July 13 from 10 a.m - 6 p.m. in their new location, in the old Piggly Wiggly shopping center. There will be hot dogs and drawings for prizes through the day. Come on out and find some good bargains, according to Bea.
Thought for the week: "Your mind is a garden: your thoughts are the seeds; you can grow flowers or you can grow weeds." Amen.
