Last weekend was Labor Day. My mother always told me to not wear my summer whites after Labor Day. I don't know whether that was a fashion myth or Martha Stewart's philosophy.
Promotion Day was held in many Christian churches at the end of August. At First Methodist the children were recognized and promoted. Sherry Bush was honored with a perfect attendance for last year. Congratulations to Sherry, who is a childhood friend of mine.
Happy birthday and get-well wishes to Helen Trusty, an aunt of mine. She is recuperating at a rehab center in Lebanon after foot surgery. T.M. and Juanita Hooper visited her last week. T.M. and Helen were neighborhood children growing up.
Get-well wishes to Faye Iverlett, Bob Pettis Jr. and Rev. Terry Little.
Sympathy to June Vaughn in the death of her mother, Gladys Williams Curtis. She was a former beauty shop operator here for many years.
Kathyrn Lewis of Knoxville and Janis Cannon of Nashville visited their mother, Betty Bailiff, and helped her to celebrate another birthday.
I attended a funeral of a former co-worker's mother in Baxter last week. I worked with Sandy Koger at DHS in Cookeville for many years. Mrs. Lydia Martin was also Dr. Steve Cooper's aunt.
Enroute there, I was delighted to find the Hurricane Bridge open, both lanes. I want to consult Tommy Webb and find out the origin of the Hurricane and Sligo bridge names.
Last month was the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s led march to Washington. His "I have a dream" speech became very famous.
We attended open house at Smithville Elementary School also last week. It's good support for the teachers and staff when parents and relatives attend these events.
Congratulations to Juanita Hooper and Bobby Joines , DeKalb nominees for the Caney Fork Electric Cooperative Board. They will be presented at the 2013 annual meeting on Oct. 1 at the McMinnville Civic Center.
Be sure and read the story of Wayne Hubbs and his famous Gyro which he built in next week’s issue of the Review.
In closing this thought: "Happiness keeps you sweet; trials keep you strong; sorrow keeps you glowing but only God keeps you going."
