From the Cripps trip to Russia

School is back in progress for DeKalb County students and teachers. Summer vacations are over for most of us. At First Methodist last Sunday, Jean Myers spoke on “Christmas Child” shoeboxes that were given out for the children to fill and return in a week or two for children who don’t receive any Christmas presents. Sue Puckett Jernigan is the DeKalb County Coordinator for this holiday project.

Get well wishes to Doyle Smith, Linda Judkins, Laird Barnard, Lois Farwell, Karen Jacobs, Jane Cantrell, Eddie Sutton and Jane Eller.

Sympathy to the family of Christiana Dobbyns.

On Sunday, Oct. 8, Smithville First Methodist Church will be honoring the firemen of the Smithville Fire Department at the 11 a.m. service. We appreciate these men in our community.

Rita and Dr. Don Cripps have returned from a trip to Russia. My friend Brenda and Rev. Randall Ganues and Elaine Craighead of Cookeville were also on the trip. Below is the Cripps account of the trip.

Thought of the Week – Lift your face to the heavens and let His guiding ways sooth your soul.

Cripps Trip

We went to Russia in August for two weeks. We traveled with Educational Opportunities (EO) with Brenda and Randall Ganues of Murfreesboro, Elaine Craighead of Cookeville and Ron Goodman of Sewanee.

We stayed three days in Moscow and then six nights on the Volga River and visited six other towns while on the riverboat. We stayed in St. Petersburg three nights after the Volga cruise.

For us, the highlight of the trip was the Kremlin, Red Square and St. Basil Cathedral in Moscow.

On the Volga river portion the highlights were the Kirillo Monastery built in the 1400s with its beautiful icons and we also enjoyed the wooden Russian orthodox churches built in the period of 1500-1600s.

In St. Petersburg the highlights were the Hermitage Museum, the Peterhof, Catherine the Greats summer palace.

We came home with typical souvenirs of Matryoshka stacking dolls and amber jewelry. The Russian people were very nice to us and also they were very religious.
