When my son Ralph was about two-years old, we lived in a house at Cross Roads owned by Arthur and Mary Vickers.  J.D. worked for Mr. Arthur and some other land owners in the community.
I remember that our peddler at that time was Bill Cantrell.  One day, I purchased a straw hat from him that Ralph called his ‘Peddler Bill hat’.  Also at that time J.D.’s parents, Floyd and Della Vaughn, lived on Erbie Vaughn’s farm on Short Mountain Highway near Pisgah Church.  The farm later became known H.J. Judkins’ Nursery.
There were lots and lots of blackberries on the farm.  Miss Della told me that I should visit and pick some, she promised to help me make jam from the berries.  J.D.’s youngest brother, Billy, and June Beshears, who were just kids, at the time, went with us.  June is the daughter of the late Adam and Lou Beshears.
While I was picking berries, Ralph played under a shade tree nearby.  When we headed back to the house, his straw hat was nowhere to be found.  We then walked back to the shade tree and there was a cow chewing on something.  It was either her cud or Ralph’s missing hat, but there was no way to prove the point.
