Mr. Guy Grayson Mathis age 95 of Liberty, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro. 

 

He was born May 13, 1921 to his parents, the late Felly B. and Maggie Dodd Mathis. 

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Davenport Mathis; daughter, Sharron Mathis; grandson, Jared Scott Atnip; 3 brothers, Frank, Felly B., Jr, and Howard Mathis; 2 sisters, Willette Barrett and Lora Dell Vanderpool. 

 

Guy was a faithful member of Cave Springs Missionary Baptist Church we he served as a Deacon, he was a member for over 50 years of DeKalb Lodge #358 and was a member of DeKalb Chapter #488 O.E.S.  He was a farmer.

 

 Mr. Mathis was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran, where he was Private First Class, 42nd rainbow Division in Company M 222nd Infantry Battalion.  He received several metals including: Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, WWII Victory Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII.  He had a story to tell of survival during the War and still had complications and scars from the injuries. 

 

He is survived by his 3 children, Patricia "Patsy" (Odie) Tallent and Guylene (Dr. Robert) Atnip both of Smithville and Van (Debbie) Mathis of Liberty; 10 grandchildren, Louis Taft Hendrixson, III, Jill Goneke, Javon Hendrixson, Josh (Jennifer) Tallent, Jason Tallent, Lisa (Greg) Tramel, Robert Atnip, Jr., Tara Jane Atnip-Summers, Eric Mathis, Pamela (Richard) Delay; 12 great-grandchildren, Nicholas Tallent, Brantley Goneke, Paris Grigsby, Nicholas Pendleton, Chase (Meghan) Tramel, Caleb (Hillary) Tramel, Ari Scott Cook, Preston Grace Summers, Jessica Gribble, Chandler Shaw, Olivia Shaw, Van-Ryker Delay; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Callen and Coah Tramel; several nieces and nephews. 

 

There was a Masonic Service held on Friday, December 16, 2016 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. 

 

Funeral Services were conducted Saturday, December 17, 2016 at DeKalb funeral Chapel. Bros. Charles Allen Gentry, Ricky Scurlock and Ray Swicegood officiated with burial to following in Sycamore Cemetery with Military Honors.

 

 

 

DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
