James Bernard Smith, 67, husband of Joye Womack Smith, died Sun, June 22, 2014 surrounded by family at Baptist Health in Lexington, Kentucky.
He was born in McMinnville  on July 27, 1946 to the late Jack C. and Marjorie H. Smith and raised in Smithville.
After graduating from Tennessee Technological University with a BS in Accounting, he served as an officer for two years in the US Army Finance Corp. Followed by several years in the Tennessee Army National Guard. He was first employed by Price Waterhouse in Nashville. Jim spent his career as Chief Financial Officer for several different utility and manufacturing companies. He and his family moved to Lexington in 1992, where he was employed at Hunter, Mfg. Inc. and later at Foam Design, Inc.
Jim was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, Lexington, Kentucky  and his deep love of God and man was obvious to all who met him. He was an active participant in the Friends in Christ Sunday School class. He served on many different committees, including several years as Church Treasurer. Jim was a servant of others and was often seen stopping to help those in need of food and life’s necessities. Because he was a humble man, his conversations were rarely about himself. He preferred to ask questions and learn from those he met. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, always taking an interest in his family’s joys and pleasures.
An avid photographer, Jim was a member of Lexington’s Creative Camera Club, Inc. He was often seen taking photos of church and community happenings as well as his grandchildren’s sporting events. He also was a member of the Financial Executive Institute (FEI), living in Nashville and in Lexington, serving in various positions, including most recently, as secretary.
In addition to his wife of 47 years, Jim is survived by his daughter, Marta Smith (Brad) Scroggin; a son Jason Bradley (Tiffany) Smith; seven grandchildren – Meredith, Brandon, Shelby and Sloan Scroggin, and Carter, Jackson, and Taylor Smith; three brothers Jack C. (Linda) Smith Jr. , Lexington, Tyree H. (Joyce) Smith, McMinnville,  and Karl D. (Pam) Smith, Nicholasville; one sister Keely S.(Tim) Hogan, Nashville; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A service of honor and remembrance will be held June 26 at Calvary Baptist Church, in  Lexington, Kentucky. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery.
Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Lexington, Kentucky, was in charge of arrangements.
