Funeral services for James Reece Looney, 86, of Smithville, were held May 30 at Johnson Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Bro. Garry Farris officiated with burial following in Johnson Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Looney passed away May 27 at NHC of Smithville. He was a superintendent of East Tennessee Bridge Builders, a WWII Veteran of the Navy, on the USS Solomons Aircraft Carrier Ship CVE67, a Sea Man First Class, and affiliated with Johnson Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Houston and Callie Armenda Jackson Looney; six sisters, Edith Cantrell, Mary Lou Robinson, Sally Cantrell, Auda Mae Maynard, Pauline Billings, and Willie Dimple Maynard.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Polly Collins Looney of Sparta; five children, Lana Paulette Green of Dalton, Ga., James Randall (Sherry) Looney of Knoxville, Denise Barlow of Cookeville, Claudia Michelle Maynard of Sparta and Armenta (Jerry) Pollard of Smithville; five grandchildren, Amanda Phillips of Dalton, Ga.; Michael Randall Looney of Knoxville, Kyle Matthew (Saraya) Anderson of Sparta, Alex Reece Pollard of Smithville and Hope Marie Maynard of Sparta; three great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Reece Phillips, Madison Danielle Phillips and Mia Callie Phillips; a brother and sister-in-law, Wilburn H. and Geneva Looney of Sparta; a sister, Mrs. Fletcher Griffin of Smithville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers included Dale Looney, Jeff Snodgrass, Joe Mitchell, Jerry Pollard, Michael Looney and Donald Looney.
Love-Cantrell Funeral Home, Smithville, was in charge of the arrangements.
