John Robert Young, 81, of Smithville passed away Sunday evening, Aug. 19 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital ER.

Mr. Young was a member of Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church, retired from Nissan and a National Guard veteran. He was born Aug. 5, 1937 to his parents, the late Dibrell and Lula Curtis Young.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Jenkins; and brother, Hugh Morris Young. 

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Young of Smithville; daughter, Teresa (Mark) Sullivan of Smithville; three grandchildren, Joshua (Tera) Redmon, Brandon Sullivan, Meagan (Seth) Sheffield; one great-granddaughter, Josie Mae Redmon; two sisters, Dorothy Hale and Bessie Hendrix both of Smithville and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, Aug. 22 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. Joel Wood and Bill Robertson officiating and burial followed in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers included Allen Hayes, Jordan Atnip, Bradley Barrett, Craig Hale, Michael Hendrix, and Josh Barnes.

DeKalb Funeral Chapel of Smithville was in charge of the arrangements.
