Graveside Memorial Service and interment will be held for Edward Frank Mantick, 86, on March 20 at Hillview Memorial Cemetery in Alexandria.
He passed away Feb. 21 at Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople, Penn, under the loving care of Hospice and staff.
He was born in Laurel Gardens on November 18, 1928, and lived there until he was 79, when he moved to PRC. Ed earned the nickname "Ace" from his days as a baseball pitcher for the West View High School Indians, where he was a 1948 graduate. He often told the story of being recruited by the Pittsburg Pirates, but his family did not have the money he needed to attend their baseball camp in North Carolina.
Ed went to join the Army during the Korean War, stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky. It was during one of his weekend passes to Nashville that he met his love of his life, Ruby Lee Montgomery. Ed and Ruby were married on January 5, 1952 and returned to the Pittsburg area after his discharge in January 1953. Ed worked for many years in sales, first in wholesale pharmaceutical drugs and then in automated garage door openers.
His favorite pastimes over the years included playing baseball and gold, gardening, restoring old radios, and ham radio operator.
He is survived by his loving children, Deborah of St. Simons Island, Ga, Mark of Zelienople, Penn, Neal of Watertown, Mass, Karen Glatz of Jacksonville, Fla; grandchildren, Sara and Taylor of Zelienople; sister-in-law, Mary Crook of Liberty; three brothers-in-law, Jerry and Carl Montgomery of Dowelltown and Larry Montgomery of Liberty.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Gertrude Mantick; brother, George; sister, Trudy; wife Ruby.
