Rex Alden “Denny” Davenport, 60

Rex Alden “Denny” Davenport, 60, of Antioch, TN, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2025 in Smithville. He was a man of quiet strength, deep conviction, and unwavering devotion to his family. Known for being prepared, stoic, strong-willed, and genuine, he carried with him the values of small-town life and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Rex honorably served in the United States Army Infantry for two years, stationed in Germany. After his military service, he began a long and meaningful career with the Metro Nashville Police Department. Being a detective wasn’t just a job—it was his calling. In 2008, he was recognized as Investigator of the Year, a proud highlight in a career marked by dedication and integrity

Beyond the badge, Rex had a deep love for bluegrass music. He learned to play nearly any stringed instrument from his father and shared that passion while performing with his father and younger brother, David, in their family band, The Mill Creek Bluegrass Boys. He especially loved playing the mandolin and singing, and Smithville held special meaning for him. A tradition of driving by the camp while in Smithville at the Fiddlers Jamboree in 2020 led Rex to reclaim his great-grandparents’ summer home, affectionately known as “the camp.” This became a place of peace, laughter, and endless reminiscing with his family—a chapter that brought him immeasurable joy. His deep ties to Smithville continued as he most recently performed with the DeKalb County Community Choir during the opening ceremonies of the 2025 Smithville Jamboree. You might also find him behind the wheel of his prized 1963 Cadillac Eldorado convertible—wearing his black cowboy hat and listening to the sounds of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, or Johnny Cash.

Family time was everything to Rex. He created a cherished tradition called “Thanks Christmas,” held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, ensuring time together with his children and grandchildren before the holiday rush began. His family knew he would do anything for them, and he showed his love through selfless giving, quiet sacrifices, and unwavering loyalty.

As a husband and father, he was protective and dedicated. As a grandfather, he discovered a love and joy he hadn’t known before. His grandchildren brought him immense pride, laughter, and warmth.

Rex was preceded in death by his father, Carl Rex Davenport; his stepfather, Carl W. Crews; and his grandparents.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 12, 2025 in the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bro. Ric Lee will officiate.

He is survived by his loving wife, Connie Lynn Davenport; his mother, Carol Lee Crews; his children, Rex Alden Davenport II (Angela), Jacob Vaughn Davenport (Kaylyn), Rachel Gilley Latimer (Lon), and Kayla Lynn Davenport; his grandchildren, Alden “Harper” Davenport, Delaney Jean Davenport, Lily Grace Davenport, and Poppy Vaughn Davenport; his brothers, David Lee Davenport (Tracey) and Daniel Jacob Crews (Lisa Marie); his stepsister, Teresa Marie Graves (Brandon); and his stepbrother, Carl “Trey” W. Crews III (McKeshia).

Rex’s legacy will live on through the music he loved, the values he upheld, and the family he adored.

Love-Cantrell Funeral Home, Smithville, was in charge of the arrangements.
