Mr. Shelby Elrod, 69, of Alexandria, died Aug. 17 at his Walker Creek Road home in Alexandria after suffering an apparent heart attack.
A memorial service was conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning August 20 from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home with his brother, Bobby Elrod delivering the eulogy.
Mr. Elrod was born in the Brindley Hollow Community of Putnam Co. on Nov. 11, 1941. He was one of six children of Willie Oscar Elrod and Willie Grey Watts Elrod.
Two siblings, Jimmy Elrod and Brenda Faye Holley preceded him in death.
He was married to the former Sandra Burton who survives.
A son, Jefferson Davis Elrod preceded him in death in 1965. His son-in-law, Todd Lewis, died May 26, 2011 at the age of 45.
Mr. Elrod served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1958 until his discharge in 1962.
Mr. Elrod was a member of the United Steelworkers of America and retired from the Pasminco Zinc Mine after 27 years of service.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four children, Shirley Elrod of Brush Creek, Shelia Dodd of Watertown, Jeremiah Elrod of Alexandria, and Rachel Lewis of Watertown; three siblings, David Elrod & wife Dorothy of the Saint Mary’s Community, Bobby Elrod & wife Linda of Buffalo Valley, Peggy Willis & husband Eddie of Griffin, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
Sanderson Funeral Home, Carthage, was in charge of the arrangements.
