Funeral services for Sgt. Wilbur J. Bowman, Sr. affectionately known as “Sarge”, 93, of Smithville were held Jan. 15 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Bro. Micheal Hale and Bro. Donnie Kelly officiated with burial following at DeKalb Memorial Gardens.
He passed Jan.12 at his residence.
Sarge was born August 7, 1920 in Chattanooga to his parents the late Sparlin and Loretta Quinn Bowman.
He served in the U.S. Army for 26 years, having retired in 1963. He was on active duty during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Sarge taught ROTC at McMinnville High School for many years. He was a carpenter.
On February 20, 1945 he married Dell Ma Grooms, which preceded him in death.
He is survived by four sons, Wilbur J. (Beverly) Bowman, Jr. of Nashville; Dennis (Sandy) Bowman of Chattanooga; Larry (Mary Lou) Bowman of Texas and Tracy (Marienne) Bowman of nashville; six grandchildren, Gary, Brandi, Peter, Stacie, Shaun and Mathew; several nieces and nephews also survive; special friends, Diane, Beth, Kenneth and Betty and the Neal family; Curtis Harness and Tom Hopkins.
Pallbearers included the Veterans Honor Guard.
DeKalb Funeral Chapel, Smithville, was in charge of arrangements.
