William Edward Matthews, 64, of Smithville passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital.

He was a Baptist, and a nurseryman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Junior Matthews, and Betty Frances Davis Murphy; one brother, Terry Murphy; four sisters, Martha Jane Todd, Patty Shoemake, Brenda Taylor, and Jena Hesson.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Rita Davis Matthews; two sons, Gary and Susan Matthews, and Stacy and Enedina Matthews; one daughter, Tina and Darren Templeton; 11 grandchildren, Josh Puckett, Jacob and Andrea Puckett, Janda and Josh Hendrixson, Shea and Justin Foster, Arrion, Arianna, Tayza and Jonathan Matthews, Kaitlin and Abby Ferrell all of Smithville, Dillian Templeton of Texas; six great-great grandchildren, Eli, Levi, and Ava Puckett, Serenity Foster, Mackenzie Hendrixson, and Avery Martin; five brothers, James and Darlene Matthews, Willie Matthews, Roy and Debbie Matthews, Randall Neal, Doug and Norma Murphy; three sisters, Hele Ervin, Pam and Kevin Cain, and Kathy Murphy all of Smithville.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 8, 2016 at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bro. Nathan Thomason and Bro. Bobby Thomason officiated with burial following in the DeKalb Cemetery.

Pallbearers included; Jonathan Matthews, Arrion Matthews, Jacob Puckett, Josh Hendrixson, Justin Foster, Eric Ervin, Greg Matthews.

Love-Cantrell Funeral Home, was in charge of the arrangements.
