McConoughey
Wylie “WJ” John McConoughey, 90, of Huber Heights, OH died peacefully on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at his residence at the Webb House in Smithville.
He was retired from DP&L Power Company; a 32-degree Master Mason of 62 years of Dayton Lodge 147, Dayton, Ohio; Wayne High School graduate Class of 1944; and a member of Sulphur Grove United Methodist Church in Huber Heights, Ohio.
He participated fully in several masonic organizations, including the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Patron multiple times; Scottish Rite; High Twelve Club #069 Dayton, serving as Secretary for over 10 years; and the International Order of Job’s Daughters, where he served as Associate Guardian for eight years. He also worked for many years as a precinct judge for the Montgomery County, Ohio election commission.
In the 1980’s, he was proprietor of Lakeview Inn in Lakeside, Ohio. It was a rewarding semi-retirement project where he forged great friendship and spent many evenings photographing beautiful Lake Erie sunsets. He delighted in singing and had a broad appreciation for music, but was especially fond of old time hymns, barbershop quartets and swing bands with a lot of brass.
His memorial service will be held on July 11, 2016 at 11 a.m., with visitation from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at Sulphur Grove United Methodist Church, 7505 Taylorsville Road, Huber Heights, OH 45424, www.sulphurgrove.org
A private burial will be attended by immediate family Monday afternoon at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles “CE’ and Matilda “Jennie” Jane Doak McConoughey, brothers, Charles “Ted” and Nyal and sister, Helen.
Survivors include a son, Jim and Gina McConoughy of Illinois, and daughters, Lisa and Morris Lewis of Thompson Station, TN Katy and Bob Fritschie of Huber Heights, OH, Jennifer and William Sherwood of Smithville, TN. Nine grandchildren, Elizabeth McConoughey of Portland, OR; J Spencer McConoughey of Chicago; John Rebekah and Erin Lewis of Thompson Station, TN; Kelsey and Bob Fritschie of Huber Heights, OH; and James and Nate Sherwood of Smithville, TN. Nephew, Wayne McConoughey and niece, Janet McConoughey of Tucson, AZ.
