Impossible
Larry Steffee 2021

On June 4, 1967, an American action spy film series called Mission: Impossible won three major awards at the 19th Emmy Awards at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California.  The films were based on the 1966 TV series created by Bruce Geller, and was mainly produced by Tom Cruise, whom played Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Mission Force.  The films were directed, written, and scored by various filmmakers and crew, while incorporating musical themes from the original series.

“Words from Above” in the Bible tell us that as far as Almighty God is concerned, there is nothing impossible.  Jesus specifically said in Matthew 19:26 that there are things that are impossible with men, but with God all things are possible.  In Luke 1:37 Jesus put it in other words when He said, “With God nothing shall be impossible”.  An angel of God asked Abraham in Genesis 18:14, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”  A man once brought his son to Jesus because he had an evil spirit causing him to foam at the mouth, gnash his teeth, and waste away in his body.  The disciples of Jesus tried unsuccessfully to cast out the evil spirit, so they brought him to Jesus.  He was able to cast out the evil spirit, and then said, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.

The apostle Paul wrote about the idea of believing when he wrote about what he called faith, saying that without faith it is impossible to please God.  He wrote an entire chapter about faith in Hebrews 11, and it is called the Faith Chapter, where he gives numerous examples of some great men and women who demonstrated great faith in God.  The amazing thing about their faith is that they truly believed the promises of God even thought they never got to see the fulfillment of those promises.  Paul says they were persuaded that the promises would one day be fulfilled, and so they gladly embraced them.  He said that they realized that they were simply strangers and pilgrims on the earth, and that their final home was in a place called heaven.

Despite being the constant traveling companions to Jesus, His twelve disciples had some moments when they struggled with believing.  The most famous example involved Thomas, who had trouble believing that Jesus had risen from the dead following His crucifixion.  However, when he actually saw Jesus for himself, he then believed it.  Jesus pointed out that Thomas came to believe because he saw, but those who believed without seeing were far more blessed.  May we all believe that with God nothing is impossible.
