On Oct. 28 hate groups consisting of people who believe they are white plan to hold rallies to promote their anti-immigrant, anti-black, and anti-Jewish views in Shelbyville and Murfreesboro.
Many people are planning non-violent counter marches in both cities. For too long in this country terrorist groups like the KKK and Neo-Nazis have murdered people and paraded in the streets with little to no opposition from other people who are also considered white.
I have heard people say - don’t pay them any mind. Counter-protesting won’t do anything.
The thing is, the way these hate groups feel is the way the majority of so-called white Americans have felt for the majority of American history. American traditions like slavery, lynching, segregation, sundown towns, and redlining could not have existed without the active or passive support of most white Americans.
Our current president speaks the language of white superiority and hatred of “others” and has encouraged the growth of these groups. He is not acting alone. Politicians know that playing on racist fears and hatred is a surefire way to get votes.
In light of the longstanding public support for racist traditions, and the political power that unapologetic racists currently hold, it makes sense to me, as a white person, to show up and be counted as a counter protestor. I hope others will join me in peacefully affirming that harming someone because of their appearance or religion is no longer acceptable in the America we are proud to call home.
