Back when I was with the paper in Warren County, I used to do a weekly wrestling column, talking about what was going on in WWE and in other major wrestling federations. It got so that the paper was so packed that the column got squeezed out despite the swell of support from wrestling fans, of which there are many.
But hey, new town, so it’s time to bring back No Holds Barred, my inside look at the wrestling business and what’s on the horizon.
This week we’re going to look at what we learned after we watched the Fastlane pay-per-view Sunday night. As many of you fans know, this week marked the last PPV before Wrestlemania as Smackdown did their Fastlane show. While the event was nothing to get exciting about, it did set the table for Smackdown’s part of Wrestlemania.
We now know, and wrestling purists are excited over this, that Shinsuke Nakamura will challenge A.J. Styles for the World Heavyweight championship. Nakamura won the privilege by winning the Royal Rumble thus insuring his place in the main event at ‘Mania. Meanwhile Styles had to overcome five challengers at Fastlane to keep the title. Much to the relief of fans who have been wanting to see this collision between these two, he retained when he pinned Kevin Owens in the middle of the ring thanks to some interference by Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon. While these aren’t huge names to passing wrestling fans, the fact is that their match will steal the show at Wrestlemania.
Along with setting the World Heavyweight title match, Fastlane pretty well revealed that we will likely have a three-way match for the tag titles pitting the New Day versus the Usos along with the Bludgeon Brothers, the latter of whom came out and laid waste to the two tag teams during their title match Sunday night. The Bludgeons are made of Luke Harper and Erick Rowan, former members of the Wyatt Family now packaged as two unstoppable monsters.
We also saw the Viper, Randy Orton, beat the defending U.S. Champion Bobby Roode in somewhat of a surprise at Fastlane. However, immediately after the match we had Jinder Mahal show up and beat down the new champion. The save was made by Roode, likely indicating we will have a three-way for the U.S. Title at ‘Mania.
We also know we will see Charlotte Flair try to retain her women’s title against the undefeated Asuka as the Japanese submission specialist came out and challenged the Queen after she defended her title Sunday night. Asuka’s streak extends back to her time at NXT and the chances are it isn’t going to end at ‘Mania. I suspect WWE is eyeing a collision between Asuka and their new acquisition Ronda Rousey at some later event.
Of course Fastlane left as many questions as it did provide answers. The show ended with no one knowing if John Cena would keep his match streak alive at ‘Mania. We also don’t know if they’ll be work for the likes of Rusev, Kevin Owens and Sammy Zayne. Did Shane McMahon’s interference in their match Sunday night indicate he will have a program with them? You know Shane is going to be jumping off something high and dangerous at the biggest show of the year.
Next week will bring us one step closer to Wrestlemania and hopefully I’ll have a few more answers.
