Here we are again, time for Christmas break from work and many school sports as students enjoy Christmas and New Year’s. Breaks are essential for health and mental stability … to refresh and recharge those battery packs in our bodies.
I usually have a conundrum during this long break every year. There are not many games being played, so I don’t have to choose between DeKalb West and Middle School on any given evening. Then again, we still have the sports section that cries out … feed me, feed me.
I actually have an entire three days off during the break. Talk about luxury. I am in heaven. But paper day comes around and there’s no substitutions allowed (pictures of cute kittens, a book review, etc.). It has to be sports related or related to sports, whichever way you want to think about it.
There’s a lot of activities that fall under sports, I know I used to cover the Warren County fishing team. I haven’t had the opportunity to find out if DCHS has one or not. If you know, don’t hesitate to forward the information to news@smithvillereview.com. I used to fish pretty often in high school and then on and off again as the years have gone by.
Hunting is another sports domain and I have had a few folks submit their deer pictures so far this year and I want to say congrats! The last time I was hunting for deer it was bow hunting in the Wisconsin Dells with some friends from work. They had a camper but there was like six of us. I brought my own little tent but they told me it got pretty cold at night which was true. Thing is I ended up in that tent anyway as everybody snored and it was hot as heck in there.
We did get one deer between us for the weekend, although it wasn’t mine. I had one shot which was way off and I knew I couldn’t make it. My friend gave me some deer steaks which I took home and we had for dinner one night. They weren’t half bad but it was definitely a different taste than the steaks from the store I was used to.
So between a feature article and my column we will get through this break together.
