That New Guy - Desperately seeking sports

I need sports. That’s right, this is a call for all things sports going into the summer as July is generally a horrible sports month as families take vacations and other events take precedence over athletics leaving the seventh month a dead zone when it comes to regular events.

Normally, DeKalb County is a sports town. When I first arrived here this spring, I was covered up with high school soccer, baseball, and softball not to mention the middle school versions of the sports. Given the sheer volume of what was going on at the various schools, it was tough to get things in as I tried to rotate it, time about, to allow most sports teams and schools to get the shine.

I’ve always been taught that high school sports get the nod over the younger sporting teams when it comes to coverage; however, I still think that the younger ones need to see their names and pictures in the paper to encourage them and have something for momma to cut out and put on the fridge. Thus the reason I tried to get middle school sports in this spring. It’s also the reason I headed over to the little league fields after the school seasons were over, hoping to feature them this summer. However, it was with much chagrin I learned those are usually over by mid-June with the exception of some all-star games.

Now, as we enter late June, we have no more school soccer, baseball and soccer. In August, everything will kick in again with football, girls’ soccer and golf, football including both high school, middle school and youth leagues. We will be crammed full of sports come August.

So, this is a chance to get your sport and league covered if you’ve got something going over the summer. It can be a youth league or an adult league.

Over in McMinnville we have a church league that swelters in the July heat every year. I played several years in the league, my slap hitting the thing of legend down there as I achieved a nice batting average despite rarely hitting one out of the infield. The problem was, it appeared the ball was getting faster every year, beating me out by a step and then two steps. So, I decided to give it up for my hamstrings' sake.

Here’s what to do if you’ve got a summer sporting event you’d like to get covered. Either call us down here at the Review and leave a message with your number if I’m not here or email me directly with your number and schedule at news@smithvillereview.com. Don’t worry, I won’t ask you to cover it. I’ll come out myself as I like taking sports pictures.

Also, since it appears I’m going to be here for the foreseeable future, let me know if there are leagues and sports you want covered that you haven’t seen in the paper. You've got to remember, I’m from Warren County so I’m a clean slate. It’s the perfect time to put your sport on the map here.
