When it comes to politics, I'm in between

You know these days it is difficult to find an editorial cartoon not lampooning President Trump. Five out-of-six had some sort of Trumpism, most of it satirical so, as not to seem one-sided, I found a sports related editorial cartoon instead.

Not that I’m personally a huge fan of President Trump, but he is our president, albeit an easy target with all his tweets and actions. Saturday Night Live always enjoys a president with a lot of quirks because it gives them that much more material for as long as it lasts.

I haven’t been a big fan of politics in this country going on 20 years now, having started to vote at 18 as a member of the U.S. Army. I think I actually voted for Dukakis one year, and my candidates generally lose. The only time I voted for a winner was Obama because I wasn’t much a fan of the second President Bush either. President Bush Sr. won me over after a while or maybe it was the eight years of Junior in comparison. I don’t know.

I actually met George Bush Sr. while stationed at the German airport – Frankfurt Flughafen – during Reforger one year. I was a communications specialist that handled all the VIP traffic coming in for Reforger with armored cars and itineraries and former President Bush Sr. was Vice President at the time.

Politics seems so divisive anymore, with prefabricated agendas you have to believe to be a member of the Democratic or Republican Party. I’m a registered Democrat but I’m a member of the NRA. Maybe I’m not really Democrat. I don’t believe in abortion, feel you have the right to carry a firearm in self-defense but strongly believe in protecting the environment and that climate change is a real thing.

I looked up the Libertarian Party’s doctrine and seem to fall into that category which, let’s face it, is a no-win scenario. Everyone wants to belong to a party that can win a presidential election. I’m not so sure the two major parties are a very good option anymore; however. I don’t have much hope for mankind to get together and – as they say – vote the bums out.

A lot of people thought they were doing that very thing by electing Trump. I admit, he does present a unique perspective when it comes to the status quo but I don’t see much happening I can put my finger on and say yeah to.

Libertarian is almost a type of anarchy which I find appealing somehow when you Google the meaning of the word. According to Webster’s, two-out-of-three scenarios I can get behind: Absence of government; a state of lawlessness or political disorder due to the absence of governmental authority or a utopian society of individuals who enjoy complete freedom without government.

Ideologically, I pick the third for a true state of affairs I can get behind. Unfortunately I don’t believe utopia exists here on earth. At least I have something to look forward to.
