When DeKalb County plays Smith County in any sport, DeKalb is always fired up. Playing in the Little League All-Star tournament in Carthage was no exception for the DeKalb 9-10 year-old machine-pitch all-stars.
To start the game, DeKalb was on the field, and Smith County had the bats in their hands.
Shortstop Isaac Hall made a nice catch for the first out. The second batter came up to the plate and helped the home team by striking out for the second out.
With two outs, Smith County recorded their first hit of the game with a line drive to centerfield. After an error, Smith County had runners on first and second with two outs. Isaac Hall made yet another outstanding play at the shortstop position, sliding to scoop up the ball and then tossing it to the third baseman for the third out.
In the bottom of the first, the first and second batters for DeKalb hit the ball to the pitcher, who threw them out at first base. Elijah Hall came to bat and hit the ball to the shortstop, who fumbled it and allowed Hall to reach first on an error.
Standing on first, Hall watched as the ball was hit hard by Jadyn Young, sailing past the centerfielder. Hall, running as fast as he could, rounded third base, as his coach gave him the green light. But the throw from centerfield beat him to the plate for the third out of the first inning.
The second inning was uneventful; however, both teams did leave runners on base. At the end of the second inning the score remained 0-0.
With a strike out to lead off the top of the third inning, DeKalb allowed Smith to pound out four straight hits with two runners crossing home plate. With runners on first and second, the ball was hit to third baseman, Tristen Stanley. He scooped up the ball and stepped on third base for the forced out.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Smith County hit the baseball to right field, driving in both runners. The next batter popped up to the pitcher, ending the top of the third inning, with Smith County scoring four runs.
To start off the bottom half of the inning, Justin Washer hit a line drive to a gap in left center field, for a single. Next up was Isaac Hall, who hit a grounder to third. The fielder gobbled up the ball and threw out the runner at second for the first out.
Tristen Stanley came to the plate and tried to lay down a bunt but popped it up and the catcher was able to make a good play by catching the ball for the second out of the inning. With the runner still on first, Elijah Hall came to the plate and drilled the ball to left field, putting runners on first and third.
With a good scoring opportunity, DeKalb's right fielder, Jadyn Young, delivers, driving in the runner on third. Caven Ponder went to the plate with runners on first and second, but hit the ball to the second baseman, who then trotted to second base for an unassisted final out of the third inning. Smith County “White” led at the bottom of the third inning 4-1.
In the top of the fourth inning, the visitors were able to hit the ball. Along with a few errors, Smith scored two more runs.
Chance Bowling led off the inning with a grounder through the hole into left field for a single. Conner Rice then popped up to the right fielder who then dropped the ball allowing Bowling to move to second and Rice to be safe at first on the error.
With runners on first and second, Smith County seemed to be unraveling, allowing Daniel Puckett to reach base and drive in a run on yet another error. With runners on second and third bases, Brady Driver smacks a hit to right field, driving in another runner, cutting the lead in half.
With DeKalb in a rhythm, the home team sent Justin Washer to the plate. Washer hit the baseball to shortstop, driving in the runner. However, the shortstop flipped the ball to second for the forced out, the first out of the inning.
Isaac Hall came to the plate again with a runner on first. Hall connected with the ball, sending it to right field. The hit advanced Washer to second base.
Runners were at first and second base when Stanley grounded to the shortstop, which threw the ball to third base for the second out of the inning. Elijah Hall came up with runners at first and second, but he was unable to get on base, recording the third out of the inning.
At the end of the fourth inning, Smith County “White” led DeKalb County 6-4. In the top of the fifth inning, Smith County scattered hits everywhere, scoring six runs.
DeKalb put up three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning, but it would not be enough. The two teams held one another scoreless in the sixth inning. DeKalb lost 12-7, ending their post-season action.
