It was another rough week for the DeKalb County High School Tigers baseball team, falling in a series against Stone Memorial, then falling two games at a tournament in Gordonsville.

On Monday, April 10, the Tigers were on their home field where they hosted the Stone Memorial Panthers for the first of two district games of the week. DeKalb would take the lead in the second inning, but would let it slip away after the third.

Stone Memorial would come away with one run at the top of the first after a home run was hit on a 2-2 pitch by Carter Cook.

The Tigers would come away with one run at their first at bat, following a double on a line drive to left field by Ty Webb. Cook would be up next and would single on a hard grounder to left as Andrew Dakas, running for Webb, touched home plate.

The Panthers would add another run at the top of the second. With one man on third, the runner would score after a balk by Cook. Stone was up, 2-1.

DeKalb would take the lead at their next at bat, following a double on a fly to left field by Ean Jones. Carson Donnell would get a walk, then Konner young doubled on a line drive to center, sending Jones and Donnell home. The Tigers took the 3-2 lead.

Unfortunately, Stone Memorial would score one run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, then two runs at the top of the sixth, taking a 7-3 lead.

The Tigers had one last chance at the bottom of the seventh, after Young reached on a grounder and an error by short. Webb would get a walk, then Cook singled on a line drive to center as Young scored. That would be all the runs they would see as Brayden Carter and Dallas Kirby flew out to end the game.

Cook took the loss going four and a third innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out four.

The following day, the Tigers were on the road, this time traveling to Crossville for a rematch against the Panthers. This time Stone Memorials would take charge early and never lose the lead.

Both teams would go three and out to start the game, then the Panthers would get off the field at the top of the second following a double play. With one out on the board, Westin Wright at second and Dallas Kirby at first, Ean Jones grounded to a fielder’s choice at short, catching Kirby at second and Jones at first.

The Panthers would then put three runs on the board at the bottom of the second and never look back. Stone would add another two runs in the third, while DeKalb would not see points until the top of the fifth.

Jones singled on a grounder to short, then Donnell singled on a fly to left. The bases would be loaded after Dakas singled on a bunt to third. Konner Young would then get a walk, sending Jones home. Donnell would score on a sacrifice fly to left by Webb, but everyone else would be left standing after Dakas was picked off at second and Wright flew out to left. The Panthers were still in the lead, 5-2.

The Panthers would top off their score at the bottom of the sixth with three more runs, leaving DeKalb one last at bat at the top of the seventh. Young reached on a fly ball and an error by first base, then Webb got an easy trip to first with a walk. Cook would ground to fielder’s choice at short, catching Webb at second as Young took third, then Carter singled on a line drive to right field. Cook would be out at third as Young scored. That would be as far as they would reach. Wright would fly out to left to end the game at 8-3.

Carter took the loss, going five and a third innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs while striking out four.

On Friday, April 14, the Tigers traveled to Gordonsville where they faced off with the Gordonsville Tigers in tournament play.

Gordonsville got things going in the second inning, with one run, while DeKalb managed to tie the game with a run of their own at the top of the fourth. Webb doubled on a line drive to center, and later Carter singled on a grounder to short as Dakas, running for Webb, came home. That would be the only run DeKalb would see in the game.

Gordonsville had one run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning to claim the 4-1 victory. Evan Prichard took the loss from the mound, going six innings, while allowing seven hits and four runs.

It would be much the same the following day as the Tigers took on Jackson South Side. Jackson scored two runs in the first, second and third innings, with DeKalb only getting on the board late at the top of the fifth with a run by Carson Donnell. Jackson would take the 6-1 win.

Donnell took the loss from the mound, going one and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on two hits and striking out one. Young threw three innings in relief.
