Brayden Carter threw the heat for the Cubs in their win against Ben Lomand.

DeKalb Youth Baseball’s Senior League was on the field last week, playing some exciting games. This year’s league is made up of four teams, three from DeKalb County, and one from Warren County, all playing at Joe L. Evins Ballpark in Smithville.

On Tuesday, June 1, Ben Lomand Connect faced off against the Wilson Bank Cubs, in a game that would be big for the Cubs.

Ben Lomand started things off, getting a single by their first batter, Corban Felton, on the first pitch of the game. Felton would steal his way around the bases, eventually putting one point on the board for Connect. Unfortunately that would be the only time the team would score in the game.

Once the Cubs stepped up to the plate, they wasted no time putting runs in the books. Jordan Parker walked, then Ian Colwell hit a single, putting two men on base. Matt Rowe then doubled, putting two runs on the board. Jon Hendrix would reach on an error, and by the time Ben Lomand got off the field, the Cubs were up, 3-1.

With Brayden Carter on the mound, Connect would go three and out at their next at bats. Then, the Cubs picked up where they left off. Carson Donnell started things off with a triple, then Braxton Cantrell hit a single. Parker would get on base next with a grounder, followed by Colwell with a single. In the end, Donnell, Cantrell, and Parker would touch home plate, putting the Cubs up, 6-1.

Carter would strike out the next two Ben Lomand batters, then one would take first after being hit by a pitch. Carter was unfazed however, striking out the next batter and getting off the field.

Once again the Cubs found their bats hot, and Hendrix, Conner McClure, Donnell, and Cantrell each reached with a single. Aided by a double by Colwell, all four would cross home plate, increasing the Cubs’ lead, 10-1.

At the top of the fourth, Ben Lomand just could not get back into the game, and would go three and out their next turn at bat.

The Cubs had one last nail to drive into the coffin. Hendrix would take first with a walk, then be caught at second after a single by McClure. Donnell was up next and drove McClure home with a triple, and that is where the game would end. The Cubs took the 11-1 victory.

Carter took the win from the mound, with Hendrix coming in relief in the fourth.

That same evening, the C&S Farms Braves took on the Southern Landscape Supply Yankees in what would turn out to be a pitching battle.

The Braves struck first with first at bat Hunter Cantrell getting a single. With Cam Caballero on the mound, Cantrell would steal his way around the diamond to score. Caballero made quick work of the other batter, striking out the next three.

Westin Wright was on the mound for the Braves, and saw the first two batters out, then Ty Webb would come away with a single. Then Caballero would fall at the plate to end the inning.

Luke Midgett and Evan Prichard would go down swinging for the Braves in the second, then Bryson Arnold would foul out to get the Yankees off the field. But, the Yankees could do no better. They would also go three and out.

The Braves would get Aiden Taylor on base with a walk, but would leave him standing in the third.

Then, the Yankees had an opportunity. After the first batter went down swinging, Owen Snipe was walked, followed by Nick Daw reaching on an error by shortstop. After that, Carson Vincent also walked, loading the bases. It would be as far as they would get, as the next two at the plate would foul out and end the inning.

At the top of the fourth, Devin Fish singled for the Braves, followed by Wright walking. Later, Midgett would walk, then Prichard would reach second off of an error, Fish and Wright scoring. The Cubs added to their lead, 3-0.

Caballero finally got the Yankees on the board in the fourth. After a single, Gavin Cooper walked, then Braxton Cantrell was hit by a pitch. JR Coronada would get a single, with Cooper out at second, but Caballero came home. The Yankees were finally on the board, 3-1.

The Braves fell one, two, three at the top of the fifth, and it looked as if the Yankees had some momentum. Vincent got on with single, but then Tucker Webb and Ty Webb went down swinging. Caballero took first with a walk, but then Cooper would fall at the plate to end the inning.

The Braves added some distance in the sixth. Fish reached with a single, then Wright doubled. Donnell would reach with an error with Fish scoring, then Midgett would get on first with Wright touching home. The Braves had a 5-1 lead.

With Donnell taking over on the mound for the Braves in the fourth, the Yankees had one last chance. They would go three and out, giving the Braves the win.
