The DeKalb County Tigers Baseball Team played its last regular season game last week and before hand, the team and fans honored the graduating seniors for their contributions to the team, as well as Head Coach Scott Odom for his 20 years as a coach.
Tuesday, April 30, was the last regular season game for five Tigers baseball seniors whom, over the last four years, have helped compile a record of 93 wins and 21 losses – an 82 percent winning percentage. In that time the team has won two district championships, two region championships, two sub-state championships, and have been to two TSSAA state tournaments, where the Tigers finished third in 2010 and fourth in 2011.
Evan Curtis is a four-year varsity member of the Tiger baseball team and the son of Freddie and Trena Curtis of Smithville. Evan started in the infield, outfield, and at pitcher for the Tigers and plans to graduate from college and earn a business degree. His favorite moment as a Tiger is hitting his first career high school homerun earlier this year.
Hunter Graham is a four-year varsity member and the son of Doris and Kyle Graham. He has been a four-year starter for the team and has signed to play baseball at Columbia State Community College. He has played infield, outfield, and as pitcher this season. Hunter was named to the All-District team last season and his favorite memory as a Tiger is he and Stephen Howell hitting back-to-back homeruns against Livingston.
Stephen Howell is a three-year varsity member of the Tiger Baseball team and was escorted during the ceremony by Whitney Cox. Stephen plans on attending Tennessee Tech and becoming a pediatric nurse. He was named to the All-District team last season and his favorite memory is also he and Graham hitting back to back homeruns.
Cody Puckett is a four-year varsity member of the Tiger baseball team and was escorted on the field by his mother Lisa Puckett. Cody has been named to the 8AA All-District team two times. He has also been named to the all region team twice and as Tennessean Super Sophomore Pitcher. His plans are to attend Columbia State for baseball. His favorite moment was throwing his first perfect game in high school.
Seth Stanley is a four-year varsity member of the team and the son of Dale Stanley and Paul and Tenille Rowland. Seth plans to attend Bryan College to major in education. His favorite moment as a Tiger was making history by going to the state tournament not once, but twice.
Coach Odom was also honored before the game for his twentieth year as a coach for the Tigers. He served four years as an assistant and is in his sixteenth year as head coach. Coach Odom has an overall record of 319-115, a 735 winning percentage. His favorite memory is taking DCHS to its first two state tournament appearance and first win in the tournament. Odom said he is very proud of his team and particularly this group of record setting seniors.
