Finding themselves in a pitching duel Monday afternoon on the home field, the Dekalb County Tiger baseball team lost a key district matchup to the visiting Upperman Bees in a 2-0 game.
In a the three-hit shut-out, Bees starter Winston Cannon had a strong performance on the mound, posting 12 strike outs while surrendering just one walk. Tiger starter senior Cason Oakley gave up seven hits with one walk in seven innings.
The Bees plated the first run of the game in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly by Cannon. In the top of the fifth inning, Upperman scored the final run of the game, extending their lead to 2-0. The Tigers’ best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when a two-out rally ended with the bases loaded, stranding the tying run at second base.
Christian Pruitt, Aaron Patterson and Sam McMillen each had a single for the Tigers. Upperman’s Winston Cannon got the win, while DeKalb’s Cason Oakley recorded the loss.
The Tigers drop to 1-6 for the season but will try to bounce back into the win column Friday as they host the White County Warriors. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
