The DeKalb West School Bulldogs baseball team began their season last week with a pair of wins on their home field. The boys dominated their first two games in front of the hometown crowd.
On Monday, March 6, the Bulldogs hosted the Monterey Wildcats. DWS would hold the team scoreless through much of the game.
After holding the Wildcats scoreless at the top of the first, the Bulldogs piled on five runs. Ben Driver, Tucker Webb, Luke Johnson, Chase Young, and Porter Hancock would each cross home plate.
Driver would score for the Bulldogs again in the second, while Webb, Hancock, Elliot Barnes, and Cooper Odom would each add runs in the third. Driver, Barnes, Odom, and Anthony Moore would nail the coffin shut with runs in the fourth.
It would be a four RBI day for Tucker Webb. Webb was bad news for opposing pitchers driving in four on two hits to lead DeKalb West Bulldogs past the Wildcats 14-1. Webb drove in runs on a single in the third and a single in the fourth.
Kollin Young earned the victory on the mound for DeKalb West Bulldogs. The righty surrendered one run on two hits over four innings, striking out seven. Reed Midgett threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Tanner Brown took the loss for the Wildcats allowing three hits and 10 runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out five.
Webb went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bulldogs in hits. Keegan Taylor led DWS with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with 12 stolen bases. The Bulldogs claimed the 14-1 victory.
The following Thursday, the Bulldogs were back on their home diamond, where they hosted the Gordonsville Tigers. It would be another big day for DWS.
Luke Johnson was clutch at the plate, driving in five on two hits to lead the Bulldogs past Gordonsville 13-2. Johnson drove in runs on a single in the first, a double in the second, and a groundout in the third.
Gordonsville got on the board first, scoring two runs in the first inning. It would be their only appearance on the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs grabbed the lead at the bottom of the first, scoring three runs with runs by Driver, Webb and Johnson. Driver and Webb took walks, while Johnson reached on a single. DWS then scored on a wild pitch during Silas Kirksey's at bat.
The Bulldogs would add six runs in the second inning. The rally was led by doubles by Johnson and Kirksey and a walk by Tucker Webb.
The Bulldogs would seal up the victory in the third, with an additional four runs, claiming the 14-2 win.
Johnson was credited with the victory for DeKalb. The hurler lasted four innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out eight and walking one.
DWS collected five hits on the day. Barnes and Johnson each collected two hits to lead the Bulldogs, and DeKalb didn't commit a single error in the field. Webb had the most chances in the field with eight.
