The DeKalb Youth Baseball’s Senior League was back on the diamond last week, getting some games in after a week of rain. They even tried to get one game in that eventually was called due to the wet stuff.
On Tuesday, June 8, the Wilson Bank Cubs faced off against the C&S Farms Braves in a close match that would eventually be decided by Mother Nature.
The Braves would get two men on base to start off the game, but would not be able to convert before the Cubs could get off the field.
However the Cubs wasted no time putting points on the board. Jordan Parker started things off with a double, followed by a single by Ian Colwell. Later, Matt Rowe would get on with a walk, followed by a double by Ty Panker. With two outs, Chase Young would drive runs home with a double of his own, followed by Collin Donnell reaching on an error. By the end of the inning, the Cubs were up, 4-0.
Down but not out, the Braves rallied at the top of the second and finally got things going. Bryson Arnold first took a base after being hit by a pitch, and later Martin Willingham and Andy Shehane would each get on with a walk. All three would cross home plate, after a single by Hunter Cantrell, Carson Donnell being hit by a pitch, and Luke Midgett getting a walk. The Braves had cut the lead, 4-3.
Once again, Parker came away with a double as he came to bat for the Cubs at the bottom of the second, and would eventually find home plate. Tyler Jackson would get a single, but later be picked off. The Cubs added to their lead, 5-3.
The Braves would go three and out in the third, but the Cubs looked to add to their lead. Conner McClure would reach on an error for the Cubs, then Chase Young would hit a single. Donnell would also get on base, but all three Cubs would be left standing as the Braves got off the field.
The Braves made things interesting in the fourth after Shehane walked and Cantrell reached on a fielder’s choice bunt. Shehane would be out at second, but Cantrell would make it home, after Westin Wright and Midgett walked. The Braves were only down by one, 5-4.
And that’s where the score would stay. The Cubs bats would end the fourth, but then rain set in and ended the game, giving the Cubs the victory.
Jordan Parker took the win from the mound, while Martin Willingham started for the Braves, with Carson Donnell taking over in the fourth.
On Monday, June 14, the Braves were back in action, this time taking on the Southern Landscape Supply Yankees. It would be a lopsided game.
The Yankees took control of the game early and never looked back. In the first inning, Ty Webb took a base after being hit by a pitch, then Cam Caballero walked. Next, JR Coronado singled followed by a walk for Gavin Cooper. Later, Cesar Gaspar came away with a single, followed by Owen Snipes taking a base after being hit. By the time the Braves got off the field, the Yankees were up, 3-0.
Hunter Cantrell would take a base with a walk for the Braves, and he would eventually make his way to third, but the next three batters would fall at the plate.
Meanwhile the Yankees would add to their lead as they started off the second inning. Ty Webb reached on an error, then Caballero hit a double. Coronado would single next, followed by a single by Cooper. Webb and Caballero would make it home, but Coronado would be run down to get the Braves off the field. The Yankees were up, 5-0.
It was a repeat for the Braves as they came to bat at the bottom of the second, with Luke Midgett reaching on an error before the next three fell at the plate.
The Yankees went three and out to start the third, then there looked like there might be a ray of hope for the Braves. After the first two batters struck out at the plate, Hunter Cantrell reached with a single, followed by Devin Fish taking a base with a walk. Then, Westin Wright came up and hit a triple. Wright would not make it home himself, but his two RBIs cut the Yankees’ lead, 5-2.
While hopes were high for the Braves at the top of the fourth, the bottom soon fell out from beneath them. The Yankees would go on to put seven more runs on the board. Tucker Webb, Ty Webb, Caballero, Coronado, Cooper, Braxton Cantrell, and Nick Daw would all touch home plate before the Braves could get off the field.
The Braves would have one more at bat, but it was too much to overcome. The Yankees took the 12-2 win.
Cam Caballero took the win from the mound, while Carson Donnell pitched two for the Braves, with Westin Wright coming in in the third.
The following day, the Braves were on the field yet again, this time taking on Ben Lomand Connect. This game would give the Braves a blowout of their own.
The Braves got on the board in the first inning, after Devin Fish walked. Westin Wright next reached on an error, later followed by Luke Midgett taking a base with a walk. Fish would make it home, putting the Braves up, 1-0.
Corban Felton would get on with a walk for Connect, and would find his way to second, but would be left standing.
Then, the Braves poured it on. Bryson Arnold walked, followed by a single by Martin Willingham. Andy Shehane would reach on an error, but later be picked off, followed by walks for Hunter Cantrell and Fish. Wright would then double, followed by walks for Donnell and Midgett. The Braves would be up, 5-0.
Connect’s William Woodruff walked as they came to bat, and later Tim Sexton reached on a single, but with two outs Sexton would be caught at first to end the inning.
Neither team would do much in the third, but the Braves opened the flood gates in the fourth. Cantrell, Fish, and Donnell would all walk on, with Wright taking a base after being hit. A double by Midgett would send two more runners home, and later Arnold would walk. Before it was over, the Braves were up 11-0.
Connect had one more at bat, but it was too much. The Brave took the victory.
Devin Fish took the win, while Lincoln Bates started on the mound for Connect, with Matthew Key taking over in the second, and Leo Castaneda in the fourth.
After that game the Yankees were back in action, facing the Cubs. It would be a close game.
Tucker Webb got the Yankees going at the top of the first, coming away with a double. Caballero, Cooper, and Cantrell would later walk, sending Webb home and giving the Yankees the early lead.
The Cubs would get men on base as they came to bat, but not the way they would have liked. Parker was hit by a pitch, followed by Colwell walking, and then Brayden Carter being hit. Parker would get caught at third, then Matt Rowe would reach. All would be left standing however, with the Yankees keeping the lead.
At the top of the second, the Yankees would add to their lead after Owen Snipes hit a single. Nick Daw and Logan Duke would each walk, and later Ty Webb would come away with a single. By the time the Cubs got off the field the Yankees were up, 2-0.
But the Cubs came to life as they stepped up to the plate. Conner McClure hit a single, later followed by a single by Hunter Cantrell. Ian Colwell would later double, followed by a single by Carter. A single by Rowe, and Tyler Jackson being hit, would push runs home, and by the end of the inning the Cubs had taken the 4-2 lead.
Cooper and Braxton Cantrell each walked to start the third for the Yankees. Snipes later hit a single, followed by Daw reaching on an error. Before the Cubs could get off the field, the Yankees had tied the game, 4-4.
Donnell would come away with a double for the Cubs in the third, later followed by a single by Parker and Colwell taking a base after being struck. Donnell would make his way home, giving back the lead to the Cubs, 5-4.
The Yankees came right back at them in the fourth however. Ty Webb took a base after being hit, and would steal his way around the bases for a run. The Yankees had once again tied the game, 5-5.
The Cubs looked to put the game away as they came to bat. Tyler Jackson hit a single, then Jon Hendrix walked, later followed by a walk by Donnell. Hunter Cantrell would get a single, then Parker got a single of his own. At the end of four, the Cubs were up, 8-5.
The Yankees had one last chance. Braxton Cantrell started with a single, later followed by Snipes being hit, then a single by Daw. Cantrell would be the only one to make it home though, giving the Cubs an 8-6 victory.
Brayden Carter started on the mound for the Cubs, with Tyler Jackson in during the second. Gavin Cooper started on the mound for the Yankees, with Ty Webb taking over in the third.
