Despite routing DeKalb County in its three meetings this season, the last being in the region championships, arch district rival Macon County managed only to venture only one step deeper in the state finals as did the Lady Tigers as they were ushered out of the post season by eventual champion, Chetham County.
Sporting the number-one ranking in the state after exposing the former number-one, Meigs County in sub-state by a count of 69-50, Macon breezed through their first round opponent in the state finals beating Covington, 56-39. However, the 31-6 Tigerettes were in for a surprise as they ran into a buzz saw in the state semi-finals against Chetham County, losing 75-51 to the 31-3 squad.
Chetham County would go on Saturday to beat Westview, 43-40 to claim the Class AA State Championship which was also the first state title of any kind for the school. Westview made it to the finals by topping Marshall County by three in the semis after Marshall ended DeKalb’s season in a three point win in the quarter finals.
