In a somewhat surprise move, the DeKalb County Board of Education voted to name the DeKalb County High School gym floor in honor of Coach Harold Luna. The late Luna coached boys and girls at DeKalb County High School from 1964-69, then began coaching the boys program only until 1984. His total record was 516-179. He passed away in December 2022 at the age of 85.

The move came during the board’s regular monthly meeting last Thursday evening. Third district board member Jim Beshearse made a motion to honor the late coach, saying, “I have had a lot of people contact me about naming the gym floor at DeKalb County High School in honor of Coach Luna. I think his record of 516-179 is one that would be hard to beat.”

The motion passed unanimously on a voice vote.
