The DeKalb County High School basketball teams traveled to White County last week, to face off with some extremely tough competition. The White County Girls team is ranked 1st in Class 3A, and seventh overall, while the Warriors are ranked 10th in Class 3A play.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Tigers took their shots, but just couldn’t hit the hoops. And, with one of its star players, Kadee Ferrell, still sidelined with an ankle injury, it would be a rough game for DeKalb. DCHS standouts like Ella Van Vranken and Dare Collins would step up their game, but it would be too much for the Lady Tigers to handle.

The Lady Tigers scored five points in the first period, with a pair of two-point baskets by Collins, and a free throw by Van Vranken. The Lady Warriors would come away with 27 points, and just couldn’t seem miss a shot.

Elle Hendrixson and Ally Fuller each had a two-pointer for DeKalb in the second period, with Hendrixson also adding a free throw. White County just kept pouring it on, scoring another 19, and taking a 46-10 halftime lead.

Avery Agee hit a pair of three-point baskets for the Lady Tigers in the third period, while Van Vranken hit a couple of two-point baskets and a pair of free throws. Fuller also added a two-point shot. White County continued to pull away, scoring 18 and taking a 64-24 lead.

DeKalb would only manage another five points in the fourth period. Madison Martin hit a three-pointer, while Van Vranken added a two-point basket. The Lady Warriors added another 19 to the board, taking the 83-29 victory.

Van Vranken had nine points in the game, while Agee had six. Fuller and Collins each had four, and Hendrixson and Martin each had three.

The boys’ game would be more competitive, with the Tigers staying with the Warriors in the first period, but then letting the game slip away.

The Tigers scored 12 points in the first period, with Jordan Young hitting a two-pointer and a couple of free throws, while Nathaniel Crook sank a three-point basket. Brayden Antoniak had a two-pointer, Stetson Agee hit a couple of free throw points, and Isaac Knowles had one free throw. The game was tied until the final second of the period, when White County hit three and went up 15-12.

As good as the Tigers played in the first, everything fell apart in the second. The Tigers only came away with three points, off of a two-pointer by Elishah Ramos and a free throw by Antoniak. Meanwhile, the Warriors tacked on 22 points, and took a 37-15 lead at the half.

DeKalb outscored White County in the third period. Agee sank a three-pointer, a two-pointer and a free throw, while Crook hit a three-point shot. The Warriors were held to just three points, but still held 40-24 lead.

Ramos sank a three-point basket for the Tigers in the fourth, while Robert Wheeler, Knowles, and Alex Antoniak each had a two-pointer. Agee also hit four points on free throws. White County matched the Tigers point for point and claimed the 53-37 win.

Agee had 12 points in the game, while Crook had six. Ramos had five, Young four, Brayden Antoniak and Knowles each had three, and Wheeler and Alex Antoniak each had two.
