The DeKalb County High School basketball program held their annual Awards Banquet last Friday evening, recognizing some of the season’s standout players and cheerleaders. Sophomore Conner Close was named the 2021-22 Tigers’ Most Valuable Player, while senior Kadee Ferrell was honored as the Lady Tigers’ Most Valuable Player. Junior Amelia Atnip was named the Most Valuable Cheerleader. All three of the top awards were sponsored by Love-Cantrell Funeral Home and presented by Chad and Shelia Kirby.

The banquet was held at the First Baptist Church Life Enrichment Center, where players, coaches, and families attended to honor this year’s teams. The Tigers’ season ended against the Cumberland County Jets during the District 7AAA Tournament, while the Lady Tigers fell to Upperman in the district tournament. The boys would finish the season at 13-14, with the girls ending at 15-14.

For the Tigers team, several individual players were recognized during the banquet for their efforts this season. While also being named MVP, Close was also honored as the Best Three Point Shooter (34%), and was recognized for Most Points (330 -15 per game). Close was also named to the 2nd Team All-District 7AAA and as the District 7 AAA’s Most Improved Player, and also made the DTC All-Star Team.

Elishah Ramos received the Offensive MVP, as well as being recognized for Most Assists (55). In addition, Ramos was also named to the 3rd Team All-District 7AAA.

Brayden Antoniak was named the Defensive MVP, as well as being recognized as the Best Two Point Shooter (60%), while Stetson Agee received an award for Most Rebounds (145) and for Best Foul Shooter (77%). Both players received District 7 AAA Honorable Mention, while Antoniak made the District 7 AAA’s All Defensive Team, as well as the DTC All-Star Team.

The Most Improved Award was presented to Robert Wheeler, while the Mr. Hustle & Toughest Player Award went to Isaac Knowles. Knowles also made the District 7 AAA’s All Defensive Team.

Freshman Jordan Parker was selected to the District 7 AAA’s All-Freshman Team.

For the Lady Tigers, along with MVP, Ferrell was also recognized for Most Rebounds and Most Assists, as well as 1st Team All-District 7AAA. She was also named to the DTC All-Star Team. Ferrell is also member of the 1,000-point club at DCHS.

Ella Van Vranken was named as the Offensive MVP and as the Best Free Throw Shooter, and also made that 2nd team All-District 7AAA and the DTC All-Star Team.

Xharia Lyons was honored as the Defensive MVP, while Avery Agee was named as the Best Three Point Shooter. Agee also was named as All-District 7AAA Honorable Mention and was selected to the District 7AAA All-Freshman Team.

The Most Improved Award went to Ella Hendrixson, while the Miss Hustle Award was presented to Madison Martin. The Toughest honor went to Cam Branin, while the GATA (Get A Team Attitude) Leadership Award was presented to Natalie Snipes.

For the Basketball Cheerleaders, MVC Amelia Atnip was joined by Macy Anderson as the Most Spirited.

The Best Stunts Award went to Sara Moore, while Best Jumps was presented to Eden Garner. Annabella Dakas was named as Best Dancer, while Best Cheer went to Reese Williams. The Most Improved Award was given to Chayla Knauer, while the Best Base and Best All Around Awards went to Katherine Gassaway. The DEAR Award (Dedication, Enthusiasm, Attitude, & Responsibility) was presented to Katie Patterson.
