The DeKalb County High School Cowboys Rodeo Team was in Cookeville last weekend, taking part in a Tennessee High School Rodeo event. The students participate in rodeo events all across the country, with the Cookeville Rodeo being the closest this season.
The local cowboy athletes work really hard all year long, with some named as favorites amongst some of the rodeo regulars from around the region. While some events are considered individual competitions, they are really team events if you consider a well-trained horses as their partner. Other events pit man versus beast, with a rider’s opponent having four legs and a bad attitude.
During Saturday night’s event La-Kota Luna placed first in the bull riding, with Coty Hattaway coming in 10th in calf roping and second in team roping. Shara Adcock won the breakaway roping on Saturday with a 3.1 second catch.
On Sunday Brandon Barnes finished in second place in bull riding, while Hattaway won the steer wrestling event. Adcock placed sixth in the breakaway roping, and placed fourth in goat tying competition. Adcock and roping partner Ramsey Goolsby (from Watertown) placed third in team roping on Saturday and second on Sunday.
Waylon West and Victor Roller both competed in bull riding competition, but failed to get qualified rides.
The DCHS Cowboy’s next event will be in Bowling Green, KY, on Oct. 26-27.
