The DeKalb County Tigers and Lady Tigers each played a game last week before taking some time off for the Christmas break. Each team came away with a big, hard-fought win against Gordonsville.
The first game saw DeKalb’s Lady Tigers facing off with the Tigerettes of Gordonsville. The Lady Tigers took the early lead in the game, with Paige Winningham getting two two-pointers in the first period, and a three-point shot by Kenzie Poteete. The Tigerettes had five points.
DeKalb found the hoops for 15 points in the second period, including three two-pointers by Winningham, two by Loren Cripps, and a three-pointer by Morgan Pedigo. Gordonsville had 14 points, and the Lady Tigers took a 25-19 lead at the half.
The Lady Tigers came away with 13 points in the third period, with a three-pointer and two two-pointers by Cripps, and three-point shots by Poteete and Pedigo. The Tigerettes had nine points and DeKalb commanded a 38-28 lead.
Gordonsville matched DeKalb’s scoring in the fourth period, each coming away with 17 points, but it was the Lady Tigers that would get the victory. Jailyn Bolding got two two-point shots, while Cripps had a three-pointer. Winningham and Poteete each had a two-pointer. DeKalb had the win, 55-45.
Winningham went four for six on free throws, while Cripps was five for four. Poteete went two for four and Bolding was zero for one.
In the boys’ game, the DeKalb Tigers had a much tougher game against their Gordonsville counterparts. DeKalb took the early lead, taking 17 points in the first period while the Gordonsville Tigers came away with eight. Justin Bone had a two and a three-pointer, while Ethan Roller, Eli Lomas, and Aaron Patterson each had a three-point shot. Kaleb Ferrell had a two-pointer.
Gordonsville was not about to just lie and showed DeKalb they meant business. The G-Tigers came away with 16 points in the second period, while holding the D-Tigers to only seven. Ferrell and Bone each had a two-pointer, while Austin Frazier came away with a three-pointer. The score was tied going into the half, 24-24.
Things looked dire for DeKalb in the third period as Gordonsville outscored the D-Tigers 19-12. Roller had two three-point shots, while Ferrell and Steven Jennings each had one. Gordonsville went into the fourth quarter with a 43-36 lead.
The Tiger fight heated up in the fourth quarter with both teams finding the goal. DeKalb scored 34 points, including four three-pointers by Roller, and two two-point shots by Bone. Patterson also had a two-pointer. Gordonsville had 23 points, but it wasn’t enough to fend the D-Tigers off. DeKalb took the victory, 70-66.
Roller was three for four on free throws, while Patterson was two for four. Frazier and Bone were each one for two.
