Well, I got it wrong last week. With all the chaos of the holidays, coupled with an early deadline for the newspaper, I mixed up the stat sheets for the three games the Lady Tigers played during the Watertown Tournament and reported that the girls had won. The truth is, the girls actually fell to Warren County 54-47 in the tournament, and came in third place. We apologize for the mix up and will try to do better next time.
In the meantime, the DeKalb County High School Tigers and Lady Tigers got back into action last week, taking on Smith County. The games had originally been scheduled for Dec. 6, but were called due to weather and bad road conditions.
Last Saturday the Lady Tigers took to the court first and found their Smith County counterparts a tough team. DeKalb fell behind early in the match, and found it hard to play catch up.
The Lady Tigers were held to only two points in the first period, that coming from a two-point basket by Paige Winningham. The Owls ran up a big lead, getting 17 points.
In the second period, the Lady Tigers finally found a rhythm, coming away with nine points, including two two-pointers by McKenzie Poteete, and another two-point shot by Winningham. Smith came away with 10 points and a 27-11 lead at halftime.
DeKalb came out strong in the third period, scoring 16 points to Smith’s 14. Poteete had two two-pointers and two three-pointers, while Morgan Pedigo had a three-point shot. Winningham also had a two-pointer. DeKalb outscored Smith in the third, but it was far from enough. Smith led, 41-27.
The Lady Tigers scored 11 points in the fourth, including two-pointers by Winningham, Loren Cripps, and Jailyn Bolding, and a three-pointer by Pedigo. Smith had 14 points however, sealing their victory, 55-38.
In the boys’ game, the scoring stayed close and came down to overtime. The Tigers scored 13 points in the first period, including two three-pointers and a two-point basket by Eli Lomas, and two-pointers by Justin Bone and Steven Jennings. The Smith County Owls got 15 points and the early lead.
The Tigers came away with 11 points in the second period, including a pair of two-pointers by Bone, and a three-pointer by Jennings. Smith had eight points, giving DeKalb a slim 24-23 lead at halftime.
The Owls pulled ahead in the third period, getting 12 points to DeKalb’s 10. Austin Frazier had a couple of two-point baskets, while Bone got a two and three-pointer. Smith was up 35-34.
DeKalb scored 11 in the fourth, with Lomas coming away with a two and three-pointer, Bone a two-pointer, and Jennings getting another three-point goal. Smith got 10 points, tying the game at 45 and forcing overtime.
In overtime, the Tigers put five points on the board, with Lomas getting a three-pointer and Frazier a two-pointer. The Owls came away with eight points and the 53-50 win.
Bone went three for four on free throws, while Roller was one for five. Kaleb Ferrell went one for six, Jennings was one for two, and Aaron Patterson went one for three. Frazier was zero for one.
