The DeKalb County High School Tigers and Lady Tigers each played two games last week, with one set of games delayed due to bad weather.
On Jan. 9, DeKalb was at home, and faced off with York Institute in games that had originally been scheduled for Jan. 7. The games had to be rescheduled due to snow and icy conditions on the roadways.
The Lady Tigers took to the court first, and it looked to be an even match early on, but DeKalb soon pulled away and came away with a big win. DeKalb scored seven points in the first period, including two three-point goals by Morgan Pedigo. The Lady Dragons scored eight points, taking a slim lead into the second quarter.
DeKalb stepped up the pressure in the second period, coming away with 12 points. Loren Cripps had a three-pointer, while Paige Winningham and Pedigo each had a two-point shot. York was held to only seven points, giving the Lady Tigers a 19-15 lead going into the half.
In the third period, the Lady Tigers continued to pull away. Winningham had two two-point shots and a three-pointer, while Jailyn Bolding also had a three-pointer. The Lady Dragons came away with nine points, giving DeKalb a 31-24 lead.
The Lady Tigers stepped it up in the fourth period, getting 18 points. Winningham had five two-pointers in the quarter, while Bolding got a two-point shot, and Cripps got another three-pointer. York was held to only eight points, giving DeKalb the 49-32 win.
Winningham went five for seven on free throws, while Cripps went four for four. Pedigo was two for two, and McKenzie Poteete was zero for one.
In the boys’ game, the Tigers fell behind early. Ethan Roller and Steven Jennings each had a three-pointer in the first period, accounting for the only six points for the Tigers in the first period. The Dragons took a big lead, coming away with 17 points.
The Tigers came to life in the second period, making a big comeback. Justin Bone had four two-pointers, while Jennings had two three-point baskets. Kaleb Ferrell also scored with a two-point shot. DeKalb scored 16 points,, while holding York to only three, giving the Tigers a 22-20 lead at halftime.
DeKalb scored 11 points in the third period, including a two and three-pointer by Bone, a three-point shot by Jennings, and a two-pointer by Roller. The Dragons had 14 points and a one-point lead, 34-33.
The scored stayed close in the fourth period, with each team finding the goal. DeKalb scored nine points with three-pointers by Roller, Austin Frazier, and Jennings. But, the Dragons came away with 10 points, taking the 44-42 win.
Roller went one for one on free throws, while Bone was zero for two.
On Jan. 10, DCHS was on the road, traveling to Livingston to take on Livingston Academy.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Tigers were outmatched from the beginning. DeKalb scored nine points in the first period, including a three-pointer by Pedigo, and two-pointers by Winningham and Ashli Chew. The Lady Wildcats came away with 21 points however, taking a big lead.
In the second period, the Lady Tigers scored 12 points, six off of free throws. Poteete and Cripps each had a three-point basket. Livingston repeated in the second quarter, taking another 21 points and boasting a 42-21 lead at the half.
DeKalb got 16 points in the third period, with Winningham and Cripps each getting a two and three-point shot, while Poteete came away with a three-pointer. The Lady Wildcats continued their drive, coming away with 26 points, and taking a 68-37 lead.
The Lady Tigers got 14 points in the fourth period, but it was far from enough. Cripps had a two and three-pointer, while Chew got two two-pointers. Pedigo had a three-point shot, while Winningham got a two-pointer. Livingston sealed their victory with 13 points, taking a 81-51 win.
Winningham went six for eight on free throws, while Cripps was three for three. Chew was two for two.
For the boys’ game, the match would be much closer, with the lead going back and forth. The Tigers scored 18 points in the first period, including a two-pointer and three three-point shots by Roller, and a two and three-pointer by Jennings. The Wildcats scored 14 points, giving DeKalb the early lead.
The Tigers repeated in the second period, scoring another 18 points. Bone had three two-pointers, while Aaron Patterson had a two and three-pointer. Eli Lomas had a three-point basket, and Austin Frazier had a two-pointer. Livingston had 15 points, giving DeKalb a 36-29 lead at the half.
The Wildcats made a comeback in the third period, scoring 23 points to the Tigers’ nine. Lomas had a three-pointer, while Bone, Jennings, and Patterson each had a two-point goal. Livingston took the lead, 52-45.
The fourth period came down to the wire for the Tigers. Patterson had a two-pointer and two three-point baskets, while Frazier, Bone and Jennings each had a two-pointer. The Wildcats scored seven, but it was not enough. The Tigers took a one-point win, 60-59.
Roller and Patterson were each two for four on free throws, while Bone went one for two.
