DeKalb faces Tigers and Bees

The DCHS basketball teams were in action last week, taking on Macon County at home, then going on the road to face Upperman.
On Jan. 14, DeKalb was at home facing off with Macon County, and in the girls’ game the Tigerettes jumped out ahead of the Lady Tigers in the first period. DeKalb scored 14 points, with two three-pointers by Kenzie Poteete and Loren Cripps, and a two-pointer by Paige Winningham. Macon got 19 points and the early lead.
In the second period, the Tigerettes of Macon were held to only five points while DeKalb pulled away with 21. Poteete and Morgan Pedigo each had two three-point baskets, while Winningham and Ashli Chew each had a two-point goal. DeKalb took the lead going into the half, 35-24.
Macon came roaring back in the third period, scoring 21 points and holding the Lady Tigers to only 13. Winningham had two two-pointers, while Pedigo had a three-point shot. Poteete, Cripps, and Chew each had a two-pointer. DCHS held the narrow lead, 48-45.
In the fourth period, the game stayed close. The Lady Tigers scored 20 points, including two three-pointers by Cripps. All other points came off of free throws. The Tigerettes also came away with 20 points, giving DeKalb the 68-65 win.
Winningham went six for eight for free throws, while Pedigo went four for eight. Chew was two for six, Cripps was three for four, and Poteete and Jailyn Bolding were each two for two.
In the boys’ game, the Tigers fell behind early. DeKalb scored 11 points in the first period, while the Macon Tigers came away with 19. Justin Bone and Aaron Patterson each had two two-pointers, while Kaleb Ferrell also had a two-point goal.
In the second period, the scoring rift widened. DeKalb scored 15 points, including two three-pointers by Steven Jennings, and Ethan Roller and Eli Lomas each with a three-point basket. Macon had 26 points and increased their lead at halftime, 45-26.
DeKalb took 18 points in the third period, with Bone and Roller each getting a two and three-pointer, and Ferrell taking two two-point shots. Jennings also had a two-pointer. The Macon Tigers were held to 17 points, but their lead held, 62-44.
DCHS ended the game with 14 more points. Jennings had two three-point shots, while Bone and Noah Parsley each had a two-point shot. Macon came away with 20 points and the 82-58 win.
Roller and Patterson were each three for four on free throws, while Bone went two for four. Ferrell was one for five, Jennings one for two, and Lomas was zero for one.
On Jan. 17, DeKalb County was on the road, taking on the Upperman Bees in a match that would be a struggle for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Tigers fell behind in the first period and would never take control of the court. DeKalb scored 10 points, with a pair of two-pointers by Poteete and with Winningham and Bolding each getting a two-point shot of their own. The Lady Bees scored 14 points.
The Lady Tigers had eight points in the second period, with Winningham, Cripps, Bolding and Chew each getting a two-pointer. But Upperman increased the pressure, scoring 17 points and taking a 31-18 lead at halftime.
DeKalb only found the goal for six points in the third period, with Winningham, Poteete, and Cripps each coming away with a two-pointer. Macon increased their lead slightly, scoring seven points and taking a 38-24 lead.
The Lady Tigers had 16 points to close the game, including three-pointers by Cripps and Pedigo, and a two-point basket by Winningham. The Lady Bees took 17 points and the 55-40 win.
Winningham went four for six on free throws, while Poteete was two for three. Pedigo was two for two, and Cripps and Bolding were each one for two.
The boys’ game was not any better, with the Tigers being outscored in every period. DeKalb scored nine points in the first period, with Bone getting a three-pointer, Jennings two two-pointers, and Roller a two-point goal. The Bees scored 10 points, giving them the narrow lead.
The Tigers scored 11 points in the second period, with Roller getting a two and three-pointer, and Bone and Jennings each getting a three-pointer. Upperman scored 13 points and increased their lead at the half, 23-20.
DeKalb came away with nine points in the third period, including a two and three-point shot by Austin Frazier, and a two-pointer by Jennings. The Bees again came away with 13 points and a 36-29 lead.
The Tigers scored another nine points to end the game, including two two-pointers by Jennings, and a two-point shot by Ferrell. The Bees sealed their win with 21 points, taking a 58-38 victory.
Ferrell went three for four on free throws, while Roller was one for three and Frazier was one for one.
