Facing off against the number-one ranked team in the state, the Lady Tigers acquitted themselves well in the loss while at the same time combined with their opponents to set a new state record for made three pointers in a game.
The district rivals combined to make 26 shots from beyond the arc, breaking the all-time state record for three point shots made in a single game. DeKalb County accounted for 14 of those shots; however, it wasn’t enough to derail the steaming locomotive out of Lafayette as the Tigerettes blasted DeKalb County 78-54.
Things looked good at the beginning as the Lady Tigers took an 8-2 lead on their top-ranked visitors. Gracie Griffin started like a house afire, scoring eight points in the opening stanza. However, a 9-0 run at the three-minute mark of the first was a harbinger of things to come as Macon took the lead for good during the frenzy of scoring and made the count 16-8 with two minutes left in the first. Their full-court press proved to be an issue for the Lady Tigers as turnovers doomed them early as they fell to 22-16 after one.
A pair of made three pointers to start the second set the tone as the Lady Tigers quickly trained 28-16 and were down 46-30 at the half.
The Lady Tigers were able to stabilize the game but couldn’t cut into the massive Macon County lead in the second half despite getting hot from three-land.
The loss came after they took it on the chin, 52-35 at Upperman earlier in the week, falling to the highly ranked Lady Bees in Baxter. Like the Macon County game, the Lady Tigers kept it close early, training 14-13 after one. Upperman was able to increase its lead 26-19 by the half but put their foot on the accelerator in the third to take a 44-29 lead into the final frame. Megan Cantrell was the only Lady Tiger in double digits as she had 15 in the losing effort.
The Lady Tigers finished off last week with a loss at Red Boiling Springs, 56-48. The Lady Tigers trailed by 25 at one point but a late run in the fourth made the final score easier on the eyes.
