DeKalb Tigers get some big wins

On Jan. 27, DeKalb was on the road facing off with York Institute in games that had originally been scheduled for Jan. 21. The district games were postponed due to poor weather and bad driving conditions.
The Tigers just couldn’t get things going in the first period, with York scoring 17 points, while holding DeKalb to only four. Justin Bone and Steven Jennings each had a two-point basket.
The Tigers found some life in the second period, outscoring York 10-6. Bone had two two-point goals, while Ethan Roller, Austin Frazier, and Aaron Patterson each came away with a two-pointer. York kept the lead going into the half however, 23-14.
The Dragons came out of halftime ready to play, and scored 16 points while keeping the Tigers to 10. Roller and Frazier each had a three-pointer, while Patterson had two two-point baskets. York was up, 39-24.
York tacked on another 16 points to finish the game, while DeKalb only managed eight. Jonathan Munoz had a three-pointer, while Bone and Jennings each had a two-point goal. York came away with the win, 55-32.
Kaleb Ferrell was one for two from the foul line, while Roller went zero for two.
On Jan. 28, the Tigers were at home against district opponent Central Magnet of Murfreesboro.
The Tigers opened up the game with 15 points, while holding CM to only one point. Aaron Patterson scored four two-pointers, while Bone had a three-point basket, and Ferrell and Jennings a two-point shot each.
In the second period, the Tigers came away with 18 points. Roller, Frazier, Jennings, and Patterson each had a three-pointer, while Ferrell and Bone each had a two-pointer. Central Magnet scored 12 points, but DeKalb boasted a 33-13 lead at halftime.
DeKalb stepped on the gas in the third period, taking 25 points. Jennings had three two-point baskets and a three-pointer, while Patterson had a pair of three-pointers and a two-point goal. Roller had a three-pointer, and Ferrell had a two-pointer. CM was held to eight points, and DeKalb took a 58-21 lead.
The Tigers tacked on seven more in the fourth. Lomas had a three-point goal, while Frazier and Munoz each had a two-pointer. CM had 11 points, but DeKalb took the big victory, 65-32.
Jennings was two for four on free throws, Bone two for two, and Patterson was one for one.
On Jan. 31, the Tigers were back in district action, this time at home against Smith County.
DeKalb came out strong in the first period and never looked back. The Tigers scored 16 points, including two two-point baskets each by Roller and Ferrell, and three-pointers by Frazier and Jennings. The Owls were held to 11 points, giving DeKalb a lead they would never relinquish.
The second period was no different. The Tigers scored 17 points, including three-pointers by Roller, Frazier, Jennings, and Patterson. Smith County had 12 points, giving DeKalb a 33-23 lead at halftime.
The Tigers were on fire in the third period, scoring 23 points and keeping the Owls to 14. Roller seemed to pull out of a recent scoring slump, taking two more three-pointers and a two-point basket. Jennings had two three-point shots, Bone two two-pointers, and Ferrell had a two-pointer. DCHS was up 56-37.
DeKalb finished the game with 13 more points. Patterson had two two-point baskets, while Chandler Vincent had a three-pointer, and Jennings a two-pointer. The Owls scored seven, giving the Tigers a 69-44 victory.
Jennings went 10 for 10 from the foul line, while Patterson was two for two. Roller and Ferrell each went one for two, and Frazier was zero for one.
On Feb. 1, the Tigers were back at home, this time taking on the Tigers of Gordonsville. The game would be a battle, staying close and coming down to the fourth period.
DeKalb scored 16 points in the first quarter, with Patterson getting two three-point goals, and a two-pointer, and Bone getting two two-pointers. Ferrell and Jennings also had two-point shots. Gordonsville was not far behind, scoring 14 points.
DCHS came away with 11 points in the second period, including a three-point shot by Roller and a two-pointer by Bone. Gordonsville scored 12 however, giving DeKalb a narrow 27-26 lead at halftime.
The battle continued in the third period, with DeKalb scoring nine points to Gordonsville’s eight. Jennings had a two and three-point basket, while Bone had two two-pointers. DCHS would keep their slim lead going into the fourth, 36-34.
The game was all about offense in the fourth period, with DeKalb coming away with 19 points. Roller had two two-pointers, while Ferrell, Bone, and Jennings each had a two-pointer. Gordonsville was held to 14 points, giving DeKalb a hard-fought 55-48 win.
Jennings went eight for 12 on free throws, while Roller went seven for 10.
