The DeKalb West Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs were in action last week, traveling to Cannon County to take on Short Mountain. While the boys continued their dominance on the court, the girls faced another loss.
On Nov. 25, the Lady Bulldogs took to the court first, taking on the Lady Bears in a low-scoring game. The hoop was hard for DWS to find in the first quarter, with their one and only point coming from a free throw. Short Mountain would come away with five points and the lead.
The Lady Bulldogs showed a little more life in the second period, scoring eight points and narrowing the Lady Bears’ lead. Lydia Brown had two two-pointers in the quarter, while Carrigan Chapman had one two-point shot. Short Mountain only got six points, but kept the lead at the half, 11-9.
DWS could only muster four points in the third quarter, coming off of two two-pointers by Addison Oakley. The Lady Bears came away with six points, keeping their lead, 17-13.
The Lady Bulldogs played the fourth period as they did the first, scoring only one point off of free throws. The Lady Bears came away with seven points and a 24-14 win.
Brown went four for nine on free throws, while Oakley and Savannah Belcher were zero for two.
The Bulldogs fared much better in their game that followed, outscoring the Bears nearly two to one.
DeKalb came out strong and fast, holding Short Mountain scoreless while scoring 10 points of their own. Ethan Martin had two two-point shots, while Damien Dishman, Cody Hale, and Jessie Smith each had one two-pointer.
The Bears bounced back in the second quarter, scoring six points to DeKalb West’s four. Dallas Cook and Braiden Jett each had two-point baskets in the period. DWS kept the lead into the half, 14-6.
The Bulldogs scored eight points in the third quarter, with Hale, Nick Staley, Garrett Driver, and Noah Roberts each getting a two-pointer. Short Mountain was held to only two points in the period and DWS’s lead increased, 22-8.
The Bulldogs wrapped up the win in the fourth period, scoring six more points. Cook had two two-pointers, while Roberts had one. The Bears scored seven points, but it was not enough. The Bulldogs took another impressive win, 28-15.
Hale and Travis Checchi each went zero for two on free throws, while Martin went zero for one.
