The DeKalb County High School football team continued to steam-roll through the 2012 Tiger schedule as they beat an overmatched Macon County Tigers Squad 45-7.
In what was the final regular season home game at John L. VanHooser Stadium, DeKalb’s offense took advantage of the short field position that the Tigers’ defense created by forcing four turnovers.
DeKalb’s offense scored on seven of their nine possessions during the game as they were only forced to punt once. DeKalb was in possession of the ball as time ran out.
Macon County began the game with possession of the football but an interception by DeKalb’s Chris Chapman gave the ball back to DeKalb at Macon County’s 46-yard line. Two plays later Chapman hit pay dirt with a 12-yard burst into the end zone. Ben Driver’s kick was good, giving DeKalb a 7-0 lead.
After a Macon County punt that sailed seven rows into the home-side stands, DeKalb’s Lucas Phillips scrambled then pulled up and fired a bullet to receiver Will Molander for a 20-yard touchdown strike. With Driver’s kick blocked, the Tigers still led 13-0.
On Macon County’s ensuing drive, the junior DeKalb County defensive tackle Eli Gill recovered a fumble on DeKalb’s 38-yard line, ending a seven-play drive.
Eight plays later, DeKalb was celebrating once again when Phillips called his own number then galloped 16 yards into the end zone. Driver’s kick was good, and at the 21-second mark, DeKalb extended their lead to 20-0.
DeKalb’s defense would stand tall once again as they forced yet another fumble. Gill scooped up the ball to record his second fumble recovery for the night.
Starting at their own 17-yard line, DeKalb’s offense marched down the field with a seven-play drive capped by Phillip’s six-yard pass to Chapman for his second touchdown of the night. Driver’s kick was good at the 5:34 mark of the second quarter. DeKalb jumped to a big lead of 27-0.
DeKalb would score on their first possession of the second half when Phillips hooked up with Molander for the second time in the game, scoring on a 14-yard pass. Driver’s kick was no good, but DeKalb’s lead grew to 33-0.
DeKalb’s next score came when running back Chris Chapman plunged across the goal line for a six-yard gain, his third score of the game.
Again the Macon County special teams unit blocked Driver’s kick. However, DeKalb’s lead ballooned to 39-0.
On Macon’s next offensive possession, DeKalb’s cornerback Alex Hayes intercepted a pass, giving DeKalb the ball on Macon’s 25-yard line.
With the game well in hand, DeKalb started substituting players. Not misfiring on offense at all, sophomore quarterback Aaron Patterson led his team on a six-play drive that was capped with senior running back Sam Giles plowing across the goal line for his first touchdown of the season. Driver’s kick was no good, but the Tiger’s took a huge lead 45-0.
Macon County would get on the board with their ensuing possession as they engineered a nice 11-play drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown run by ????? Their PAT was good, producing the final score of 45-7.
DeKalb’s Lucas Phillips went 16 of 19 for 281 yards with four touchdowns. Phillips also added 36 yards on five carries with one touchdown on the ground. A.J. Mooneyham had 43 yards on six carries. Chris Chapman carried the ball four times for 27 yards with
