The DCHS Tigers and Lady Tigers faced the Gordonsville Tigers and Lady Tigers in Gordonsville Saturday night on the road.
DeKalb won the battle of the Lady Tigers 38-28, while the DeKalb Tigers won 64-51 in a spectacular fourth-period rally.
DeKalb trailed the Lady Tigers from Smith County 10-4 after the first period of play, but a hard-fought second quarter netted them a 16-15 lead at halftime. The teams continued the battle into the third, with DeKalb outpacing Gordonsville 11-9, and taking a 27-24 lead into the final period.
DeKalb, helped out by four good shots from the foul line from Macy Hedge and a three-pointer from Lydia Brown, scored 11 points in the fourth while allowing Gordonsville only four, and DeKalb took the game by ten points.
Macy Hedge led the DeKalb Lady Tiger offense with 12 points, going 6-for-8 from the free-throw line and adding two three-pointers. Emme Colwell put 11 points up, and hit two field goals as well. Lydia Brown scored eight points, and also put two three pointers up. Hannah Panter added seven to the DeKalb tally.
DeKalb edged the Gordonsville Tigers 11-10 in the first period, but Gordonsville jumped out to a 23-14 lead by the end of the second. The Tigers from Smith County continued to dominate the game in the third, taking a 37-28 advantage into the final period of play.
Someone apparently lit a fire under Austin Johnson’s seat in the second half of the game, however. Johnson came off the bench and hit two field goals in the third, and backed that performance by scoring 18 points in the final period, including dropping in five three-point shots.
DeKalb collectively scored 36 points in the fourth, while holding Gordonsville to 14, allowing DCHS to pull out a 13-point win.
Austin Johnson scored 24 total points to lead the Tiger scoring effort. Johnson nailed an incredible seven three-pointers in the contest, all in the second half. Gentry Harpole put 17 points in for DeKalb. Harpole dropped two field goals in, and went 2-for-2 from the foul line. Colter Norris added nine, and Marshal Evins scored seven, going 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Tanner Poss put five in for DCHS, and Trey Jones added two points.
