Local golf star Payne Denman has qualified to play in the U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., on Aug. 12-18.
Denman was low medalist (first place) at a qualifier on July 30 at Tennessee National Golf Course in Loudon, TN. The qualifier consisted of 36 holes in one day, and Payne shot rounds of 72-70. This first place finish qualified him to play in Boston.
Payne also played in the Tennessee Amateur on Aug. 6-9, and placed fourth overall. The Tennessee State Amateur was played at Chattanooga Golf and Country Club in Chattanooga. There, Payne shot rounds of 68-70-72-66 with a total of 276 and four under par for the tournament.
Denman, whose family says he has been playing golf ever since he could swing a club, won two state championships as a golfer for the DCHS Golf Team.
While he is attending the U.S. Am Golf Tournament as an individual, Denman currently attends MTSU where he is also on the university’s golf team.
