The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams had a rough start to the week last week, but ended with a couple of victories. The teams were on their home court for both nights, with the hometown crowd cheering them on.
On Monday, December 6, the Lady Saints faced off with a tough Prescott team. Prescott would jump out to a big lead in the first period, scoring 23 points, while holding DeKalb to just five. Larissa Mooneyham came away with four points off of free throws, while Lillie Young scored one.
It would be Mooneyham and Young again in the second period for the Lady Saints. Mooneyham had a pair of two-point baskets and a free throw, while Young scored a two-pointer of her own. Prescott padded their lead with 14, ending the half 37-12.
Mooneyham sank a two-point shot in the third period for DMS, while Young again came away with a free throw point. Prescott kept piling it on with 15 points and a 52-15 lead.
Mooneyham would score the only points for the Lady Saints in the fourth, sinking a pair of free throw shots. Prescott would get four more points, taking a 56-17 win.
The Saints would be more competitive in their game, going into overtime play. DMS scored six points in the first period, with Logan Duke and Kiece Hannah each sinking a two-pointer, while Devin Fish added a couple of free throws. Prescott was held to just four points.
Fish had a two-pointer and a free throw for the Saints in the second period, while Wyatt Carter added two free throw points. Prescott came away with seven points, tying the game at the half at 11.
The Saints turned up the pressure in the third period, scoring 15 points. Fish had a two-pointer and a couple of three-point shots, while Jamison Troncoso added a pair of two-point baskets. Duke had a two-pointer, while Jon Hendrix added a free throw shot. Prescott was held to 11, giving DeKalb a 26-22 lead.
Fish had a two-pointer and a couple of free throws in the fourth period, while Hendrix came away with a three-pointer. Prescott added 11 points, tying the game again at 33, and sending it into overtime.
The game would go into triple overtime before Prescott would come out on top. Troncoso would have a two-point shot, with Duke scoring a couple of free throws, and Hendrix one. Prescott scored nine, taking the 42-38 victory.
The following Thursday, the teams were once again on their home court, this time taking on Avery Trace.
In the Lady Saints’ game, DeKalb scored five in the first period, with Chloe Van Vranken and Lillie Young each getting a two-pointer, while Larissa Mooneyham got a free throw point. Avery Trace was held to just two points.
Van Vranken had a pair of two-point baskets and a free throw in the second period, while the Lady Saints held Avery Trace to six. DeKalb was up 10-8 at the half.
The Lady Saints turned it up a bit in the third period, with Brooklyn Fuson getting a two and three-point shot, while Mooneyham added a pair of two-point baskets and a couple of free throws. Addison Murphy also had a pair of free throw points. Avery Trace was held to four, giving DeKalb a 23-12 lead.
Mooneyham sank five free throws for DMS in the fourth period, while Van Vranken added a couple of two-point shots. Avery Trace added nine to the board, giving the Lady Saints the 32-21 win.
The Saints would be even more dominate in their game. DMS scored nine points in the first period, with Kiece Hannah and Jon Hendrix each getting a two-pointer and a free throw, while Devin Fish added a two-pointer. Logan Duke added a free throw point. Avery Trace was held to just two.
Hendrix sank a pair of three-point shots for the Saints in the second period, while Fish added a three-pointer, a two-pointer, and a free throw. Duke and Hannah each had a two-point basket, while Troncoso added a free throw point. Avery Trace was held to four, giving DeKalb the 26-6 halftime lead.
DMS continued where they left of as they went into the third period. The Saints scored 14, with Hendrix sinking another pair of three-point shots, while Fish had a three-point basket, a two-pointer, and a couple of free throws. Luke Johnson also had a free throw point. Avery Trace again only scored four. The Saints commanded a 40-10 lead.
Each team would come away with five points in the fourth. Ty Webb had a two-pointer for the Saints, while Bradley Hale added a three-point shot. The Saints would take the 45-15 victory.
