





The DeKalb Middle School basketball season got underway last week, with the teams taking on Smith County and Gladeville.
On Tuesday, October 26, DMS was at home where they faced off with the Smith County Owls. The Lady Saints got off to a slow start, but got into the game in the second half.
The girls were held scoreless in the first quarter, making several shots but just not hitting the hoop. The Owlettes jumped out big, scoring 12 points, all off of two-pointers.
Larissa Mooneyham got the Lady Saints on the board in the second quarter, sinking a two-point basket, but the Owlettes added five more points with a pair of two-point shots and a free throw.
It was Mooneyham again in the third period, sinking a couple of two-point shots, and a pair of free throws. Smith County came away with four points and commanded a 21-8 lead.
DeKalb finally got rolling in the fourth, with Chloe VanVraken getting a three-pointer and a free throw, Lillie Young with a three-point shot, and Mooneyham and Bella Rackley each getting a two-pointer. Brooklyn Fuson also added a free throw shot. In the end it was too little too late, as Smith came away with 13 points and the 34-20 win.
The boys had a much better start to the season in their game with the Owls. Jamison Troncoso hit three two-pointers in the first period, with Luke Johnson getting one. Smith County was held to five points.
Devin Fish had a pair of two-pointers in the second quarter, while Troncoso added one more. The Owls were kept off the board, giving the Saints a 14-5 halftime lead.
Fish sank a pair of three-point baskets in the third period, while Smith County was held to a two-pointer and a pair of free throws.
Troncoso and Jon Hendrix each had a two-point shot in the fourth, while the Owls were held to a two-pointer and a pair of free throws. DMS took the 24-13 victory.
The following Thursday, DMS was back on their home court, this time taking on tough Gladeville teams. Once again, the girls got off to a slow start, with Mooneyham making the only points of the first period with a three-point basket. Gladeville came away with nine points.
VanVraken had a pair of two-point shots in the second period, with Mooneyham adding a two-pointer of her own. Gladeville pulled away, putting another 16 points on the board and taking a 25-9 halftime lead.
The Lady Saints just couldn’t get into the game and were held scoreless in the third, while Gladeville started nailing the coffin shut. They scored 18 points and took a 43-9 lead.
It was all Mooneyham for the Lady Saints in the fourth, scoring a couple of two-point shots and a pair of free throws. Gladeville only scored two points, but it was more than enough. They took the 45-15 win.
The Saints wouldn’t do much better. Gladeville jumped ahead early and never let go of the lead. Hendrix put DMS on the board with a two-point shot in the first, but Gladeville came away with six.
Nick Daw and Fish each had a two-pointer in the second period, but Gladeville added 12 points and took the 18-6 halftime lead.
Fish added a two and three-point basket in the third, while Troncoso had a two-pointer of his own. Gladeville added nine more points.
Logan Duke had a three and two-point shot in the fourth, with Handrix getting a three-pointer and Troncoso a two-pointer. It would not be enough. Gladeville scored 12 points and took the 38-23 win.
