The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams were on the road all week, taking on three different schools.

On Monday, November 8, the teams were in Smith County where they faced some stiff competition. The girls had a tough night, while the boys were more fortunate.

The Lady Saints were held scoreless through the first half of the game, while the Owlettes put up 20 points in the first period, then another nine in the second.

DMS finally got on the board in the third period, but with just a pair of free throws by Lillie Young. Smith tacked on another 15 points.

The Lady Saints came on better in the fourth, with three two-point baskets and a couple of free throws by Larissa Mooneyham, but the Owlettes took the 44-10 victory.

The boys would fare much better. The Saints came away with 14 points in the first period, with Devin Fish getting two three-pointers and a two-point shot, while Jon Hendrix added three points off of free throws. Jamison Troncoso had a two-pointer and a free throw point. The Owls were held to just three points.

Hendrix had a two-point basket and five points on free throws in the second period, while Nick Daw added a two-pointer and Fish two free throw points. The Owls got into the game, scoring 15 points. DMS held a 25-17 halftime lead.

The Saints put up six points in the third, with Hendrix, Troncoso, and Kiece Hannah each getting a two-point shot. The Owls also had six points, with the Saints keeping a 31-23 lead.

DMS poured it on in the fourth period, scoring 17 points. Fish had a two-pointer, a three-pointer, and a free throw, while Hannah had a two-pointer and two free throw points. Troncoso had a two-point shot and a free throw, while Hendrix and Logan Duke each had a two-point basket. Smith County was held to 13 points, giving the Saints the 48-36 win.

The following evening the teams were again on the road, this time in Woodbury to face the Cannon County Lions and Lionettes.

In the Lady Saints game, DMS scored eight points in the first period, with Mooneyham getting a two-pointer and four free throw points, while Brooklyn Fuson added a two-point shot. Cannon took the early lead, scoring 10 points.

Again, it was Mooneyham as the anchor for the Lady Saints. She had three two-pointers, as well as four free throw points. Bella Rackley also scored a two-point basket. Cannon was held to only four points, giving DMS a 20-14 halftime lead.

Mooneyham was on fire in the third, scoring four two-pointers and a free throw. Addison Murphy, Rackley, and Fuson also each had a two-pointer. Cannon was held to 11 points. The Lady Saints had a 35-25 lead.

Murphy came away with a three-point shot in the fourth, while Rackley had a two-pointer and a free throw. Fuson had two points on free throws, while Mooneyham had one. The Lionettes scored 13, but DMS took the 44-38 win.

The Saints would also have a good night. Fish had a three-point shot in the first period, while Hendrix had a two-pointer, and Troncoso a free throw. The Lions were held to four points.

DMS only scored five points in the second, with a free throw and two-point basket by Daw, and a two-pointer by Fish. The Lions came away with 12 points, taking a 16-11 lead at the half.

The Saints would score 10 in the third period, with three-pointers by Fish and Hendrix, and a pair of two-point shots by Troncoso. Cannon scored another 12 points, extending their lead, 28-21.

Things got hot in the fourth period, with the Saints scoring 14 points. Hendrix had three three-point baskets, while Daw and Wyatt Carter each had a two-pointer. Hannah added a free throw. Cannon was held to just seven points, tying the game at 35 and sending it into overtime.

Free throws put the Saints over the top in overtime. Fish sand three free throws, while Hendrix and Troncoso each had two. Hannah also had a two-point shot. The Lions were held to just three points, giving the Saints a 44-38 overtime victory.

On Friday night, the teams were on the road again, this time traveling to Warren County. The girls’ team would have a rough night, while the boys’ team had better luck.

The Lady Saints were held to just four points in the first period, with Addison Murphy getting a two-point basket and Larissa Mooneyham getting a couple of free throw points. Warren came on strong with 14 points and the early lead.

DMS was held scoreless in the second, while Warren tacked on 18 more points. They held a 32-4 lead at halftime.

Brooklyn Fuson put up a tow and three-point shot in the third period, with Mooneyham adding another free throw. Warren piled it on with 11 more points.

Lillie Young scored the lone point for the Lady Saints in the fourth, with a free throw. Warren scored six, taking the 49-11 victory.

In the boys’ game, the Saints took the early lead. DMS scored 15 points in the first period, with Jon Hendrix hitting a three-pointer and four free throws, while Jamison Troncoso had a pair of two-pointers and a free throw. Devin Fish also added a three-point basket. Warren was held to just seven points.

The Saints added to their lead in the fourth, with Hendrix getting a two and three-pointer and three free throw points. Logan Duke also had a three-pointer. Warren was held to six, giving DMS a 26-13 halftime lead.

The Saints continued where they left off in the third, scoring 16 points. Fish had three two-point baskets, while Kiece Hannah had two. Wyatt Carter had a two-point shot, Hendrix a three-pointer, and Troncoso a free throw. Again, Warren was held to six, giving DMS a 42-19 lead.

Fish and Troncoso each had a two-pointer for the Saints in the fourth, while Warren had 15. It would not be enough. The Saints took the 46-34 victory.
