The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams were on the road last week, playing only one scheduled night before taking a break for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. On Monday, December 13, the teams traveled to Algood, where they would once again face their old foe.
In the Lady Saints’ game, DeKalb scored nine points in the first period, with Chloe Van Vranken scoring a pair of three-point shots, while Lillie Young had a two-pointer, and Larissa Mooneyham added a free throw. Algood inched past DMS, scoring 10 points.
Brooklyn Fuson scored a three-pointer for the Lady Saints in the second period, while Van Vranken added a two-pointer and a free throw. Bella Rackley had a pair of free throw points as well. Algood continued to creep forward, holding a narrow 21-17 lead at halftime.
Van Vranken and Fuson each hit a three-pointer for DMS in the third period, while Young added another two-point basket. Once again, Algood scored 11 points, increasing their lead, 32-25.
DeKalb scored 10 points in the final period. Rackley sank a three-pointer, while Mooneyham and Van Vranken each had a two-pointer and a free throw. Fuson added a free throw point as well. Algood came away with 12 points, taking the 44-35 win.
In the Saints’ game, the match would be a battle right into the fourth period.
DMS took the early lead, scoring five with a three-point basket by Jon Hendrix and a two-pointer by Jamison Troncoso. Algood was held to just a couple of free throws.
Devin Fish sank a pair of free throws for the Saints in the second period, with Logan Duke coming away with one. Algood would bounce back with nine points and the 11-8 lead at halftime.
The Saints came back reenergized in the third period, scoring nine points. Fish had a couple of two-pointers, while Troncoso had a two-point shot and a free throw. Kiece Hannah also had a two-pointer. Algood came away with eight and still held a narrow 18-17 lead.
It all came down to the final quarter, where the Saints would end the game with five points. Fish scored a two-pointer and a three-point shot. Unfortunately Algood also came away with five points, giving them the one-point 23-22 win.
