DMS Basketball Season Begins with Some Tough Games

The DeKalb Middle School has started their basketball season, with a couple of games already in the books.

 

On Tuesday, October 27, the teams hosted their first home game of the year, taking on squads from Rickman. The girls would have a tough game, while the boys kept things close until the end.

 

In the Lady Saints game, DeKalb put up nine points in the first quarter, with Avery Agee getting a three-pointer and a free throw, Bella Dakas a three-point shot, and Chloe VanVraken a two-pointer.

 

Rickman pulled ahead with 15 points, with Ellie Butler coming away with two two-point shots and a three-pointer, Mallie Carwile a two-pointer and a pair of free throws, and Alora Budzelik and Emma Poston each with a two-point shot. Rickman was up, 15-9.

 

The Lady Saints closed the gap in the second quarter with Dakas getting a pair of three-point baskets and a free throw, while Laurie Rigsby got a three-pointer of her own. Agee added to the score with a couple of free throw baskets.

 

Rickman was held to only eight points, with Carwile, Budzelik, Poston, and Kaylee Beasley each getting a two-pointer. DeKalb narrowed Rickman's lead at the half, 23-21.

 

Agee came away with two more three-point baskets in the third quarter, while VonVraken added two free throw points to DMS's score. But Rickman started to pull away with 12 points, including a two-pointer by Carwile, and a three-pointer, a pair of two-point shots, and three points off of free throws by Butler. Rickman was up, 35-29.

 

DMS managed only six points in the fourth quarter, with Agee sinking a three-pointer and two-point shot, and Dakas adding a free throw, but Rickman poured it on. Beasley and Poston each had a pair of two-point shots, while Butler had two two-point baskets and a free throw. Carwile added another two-pointer giving Rickman the 50-35 victory.

 

In the boys' game the Saints would have better luck. Jordan Parker put up a two and three-point basket, while Owen Snipes had a two-pointer. Rickman was held to only four points, with Rocco Carwile getting a three-point shot, and Tucker Miller getting a free throw. DMS was up, 7-4.

 

Parker and Seth Fuson each had a two-pointer for the Saints in the second quarter, along with a free throw by Cody Love. Rickman inched closer however, with Miller getting a pair of two-point shots, and Dawson Ledbetter coming away with one. DMS held the narrow lead at the half, 12-10.

 

DeKalb opened things up in the third quarter, with Ty Webb and Fuson each getting two two-pointers, while Dallas Kirby had a two-point shot and a couple of free throws. Snipe also added a two-point basket. Rickman was held to nine points, all from Miller, who got a three-pointer, a pair of two-pointers, and a couple of free throws. DeKalb stretched their lead, 26-29.

 

The Saints added seven points to the board in the fourth quarter, with Fuson, Snipes, and Parker each getting a two-point shot, with Parker also adding a free throw. Rickman was held to nine points, with Miller getting a three-point basket and a pair of free throws, Ledbetter a three-point shot, and Carwile a free throw. It wasn't enough. DMS took the 33-28 win.

 

On Monday, November 2, the teams were again at home, this time facing some tough competition from the Avery Trace Raiders. It would not go DMS's way.

 

In the Lady Saints game, DeKalb would get only three points in the first quarter. VanVraken had a two-pointer, and Agee had a free throw. The Lady Raiders came away with 10 points, with a couple of three-pointers and a two-pointer by Caralee Gilbert, and a couple of free throw points by Allie Gillies. Avery Trace took the 10-3 lead.

 

Dakas had a three-point basket for the Lady Saints in the second quarter, while Agee added a two-point basket. But the Lady Raiders continued piling it on. Anzly Roberts, Morgan Odom, Gilbert, and Morgan Delaney each had a two-point basket, while Kendyll McCloud added a two and three-point shot. Avery Trace added to their lead, 23-8.

 

Agee managed the only points for DMS in the third quarter, with a three-point shot. Avery Trace tacked on 11 more points, with four two-point baskets by Gilbert, a two-pointer by Lily McCarter, and a free throw by Gilbert. The Lady Raiders commanded a 34-11 lead.

 

VanVraken scored a pair of two-point baskets for the Lady Saints in the fourth quarter, accounting for the team's only points. Avery Trace added six more to their tally, with two-pointers by McCarter, Bailey West, and Delaney. The Lady Raiders took the 40-15 victory.

 

It would be no better for the boys' game. Ty Webb scored the only points for the Saints in the first quarter, getting a two-point basket. The Raiders' Sawyer Stone came away with four two-pointers, while Blake Owen added one of his own. The Raiders were up, 10-2.

 

Maddox Hale had a three-point shot for the Saints in the second quarter, with Snipes getting a pair of two-point baskets. Ian Barnes also added a free throw shot. The Raiders continued where they had left off. Stone and Owen each had a pair of two-pointers, with Jaren Davis getting three two-point shots and a free throw. Marthal also added a two-point shot. The Raiders' lead increased, 27-10.

 

Barnes came away with a Saints' two-point basket in the third quarter, while Parker added a couple of free throws. Owen and Marthal each had a two-point basket for the Raiders, while Stone added a two-pointer and a couple of free throws. Avery Trace was up, 35-14.

 

Jon Hendrix added a two-point basket to the Saints scoreboard in the fourth quarter, while Devin Fish had three points off of free throws. Marthal and Owen each had two-point shots for the Raiders, giving them the 39-19 win.
