The DeKalb County Middle School Saints and Lady Saints were back in action last week, traveling to Cannon County early in the week, and later hosting Eighth Grade Night during games against White County.

On Tuesday, January 2, the teams traveled to Woodbury to face off against Cannon County. It would be a tough night for the girls and boys.

In the Lady Saints game, DMS scored 10 in the first period, with Sophie Adcock and Jordyn Agee each sinking a three-point basket, while Lola Colwell and Maggie Hendrixson each had a two-pointer. The Lionettes came away with 11 points.

DeKalb put 12 points on the board in the second period, with Agee hitting a two and three-point shot, and four free throws. Hendrixson added another three-pointer. Cannon also scored 12, keeping the narrow 23-22 halftime lead.

The Lady Saints would take the lead in the third period, scoring 14 points. Hendrixson hit a pair of three-pointers and a two-pointer, while Agee added a couple of three-point baskets. Cannon was held to seven, putting DMS up 36-30.

The Lionettes got hot in the fourth, putting 15 points on the board. Hendrixson would score the only points for the Lady Saints, a three-point shot. Cannon took the 45-39 win.

In the boys’ game, the Saints would fall way behind early and never catch up. DMS scored 12 points in the first period, with a couple two-point shots each by J.T. Summers and Preston Taylor, and two-point shots by Elliott Barnes and Anthony Moore. Cannon opened up with 21 points on the board.

The Saints put 15 more points on the scoreboard in the second period. Barnes hit a pair of three-point shots, Kingston Mills a pair of two-pointers, and Summers and Hartley Hannah each had a two-pointer. The Lions scored nine, holding a narrow 30-27 lead at the half.

Taylor would be the lone scorer for DMS in the third, hitting a two-point basket. Meanwhile, Cannon racked up 22 points, taking the 52-29 lead.

The Saints would end the game with 15 more points. Barnes hit a three-point shot and a pair of two-pointers, while Hayden Quarles got on the board with a three-pointer. Summers added a couple of two-point baskets, while Hannah added a free throw. Cannon ended with 10 points, claiming the 62-44 win.

The following Thursday, the teams would be back at home for their final home game of the season, hosting White County on Eighth Grade Night. It would be another tough game for the girls.

The Lady Saints would be held to just two points in the first period, a pair of free throws by Jordyn Agee, while White County put 10 on the board.

It wouldn’t be much better in the second period, with DMS adding five to the board, a two-point shot by Sophie Adcock and a three-pointer by Agee. White County came away with 13 points and the 23-7 lead at halftime.

Aubrey Fuson sank a three-pointer for the Lady Saints in the third, but unfortunately that would be the last points the Lady Saints would see. White would add 14 in the third, and three in the fourth, taking the 40-10 win.

The boys would have a better night. The Saints scored six in the first period, off of a pair of three-point baskets by Barnes. White County put 11 on the board.

DMS put nine points on the board in the second, with three two-point shots by Moore, and one free throw each by Summers, Barnes, and Mills. White was held to five points, giving them the narrow 16-15 lead at the half.

The Saints came out on fire in the third, scoring 15 more points. Moore and Mills each hit a pair of two-point shots, Barnes a three-pointer, and Summers and Hannah each had a two-point basket. White was held to just two points, giving DeKalb the 30-18 lead.

Barnes ended the game for the Saints with a couple of three-point hoops and a two-pointer. White came away with six points, but DeKalb held on for the 38-24 victory.
