The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams had a rough night last week as they took on some strong teams from Upperman. The Upperman squads were big and fast and the DMS teams struggled to pass and set up shots.
In the Lady Saints game, the girls fell behind early. Brooklyn Fuson came away with a pair of two-point baskets, while Chloe VanVranken had one. The Lady Bees outscored DeKalb two to one, coming away with 12 points.
The second period was even worse for DeKalb. Fuson scored the only points of the period, with a two-point shot, while Upperman added to their lead with 20 points.
Addison Murphy scored a two-pointer for the Lady Saints in the third period, but the Bees kept going, adding five points to the board. They were up, 37-10.
Larissa Mooneyham had a two-point shot in the fourth, with Lillie Young getting a two-pointer of her own. The Lady Bees were held to just two in the final period, but it was more than enough. Upperman took the 39-14 win.
The boys didn’t fare any better. The Saints were held scoreless in the first period, while the Bees couldn’t stop scoring. Upperman put up 22 points in the opening quarter.
Devin Fish and Jamison Troncoso each sank a two-point basket for the Saints in the second period, but the Bees swarmed with 12 more points on the board. Upperman took a 34-4 halftime lead.
Troncoso added two more two-pointers in the third period, with Jon Hendrix getting a two-point shot of his own. Upperman had seven points, taking a 41-10 lead.
Again, the Saints were kept off of the scoreboard in the fourth, while the Bees added seven more points. Upperman took the 48-10 victory.
