The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints completed a historic season this past week, finishing second in the district as they fell just short in the finals against Overton County, 2-0 after streaking through the playoffs.

“It was our best season ever,” said Coach Justin Nokes after the finals match, noting the squad made a big step after making it to the playoffs for the first time in team history last year. They were bumped from contention in a monsoon in the first round last year, the deciding goal coming after a questionable call that led to a penalty kick.

This season the Lady Saints took a 7-2 record into the playoffs, finishing third in the district. They began their march to the championship game by beating Algood, 1-0 in the first round behind a goal from Tatum Young that came after a pass from Melanie Ortiz. The single goal was all they needed as the defense led by Delia Quintero and Laila Clark was able to preserve the shutout. The game was not only the first playoff win in team history but it was also the first playoff game played at the new DeKalb High School soccer field.

They then  beat Macon County 2-1 with goals from Caroline Tobitt and Kendall Davis. The Davis goal came on a free kick while the second goal came off set pieces when Tatum Young hit a great strike from the corner which was put home by Tobitt for the winning margin.

The championship game was played at Prescott Middle against the Overton County Wildcats and featured two Overton goals including a penalty kick. The Lady Saints had some scoring opportunities but were unable to convert.

While they fell just short against Overton County, this was the first year the team has gotten a shot at the title. The Lady Saints fielded their largest team ever this year, with 30 girls making the roster. Their overall conference record concluded at 9-3.
